So i just got a Kershaw Blur, its the 440A blade steel model, Red, for 37 bucks. It was listed as a blem, but the dealer is saying no flaws , it wasmore of a overstock issue, so i know the 440A steel is so-so but for the money was this a Deal, steal, or junk?

You got it for around $13. less than the one I've seen on Amazon, so at least in price, I think you got a reasonable deal.

The steel? I don't know. It would depend on the heat treat, and my experience with Kershaws' other steels has been pretty positive. I have an old U.S. Schrade brochure around here somewhere that says Schrade used 440A in their stainless knives when they were still made here in the U.S., and my experience with their stainless offerings has been really good as well. Bernard Levine mentioned here a while back that he had kitchen knives made from 440A and he was happy with them.

So, if the heat-treat is done right, you've got yourself a nice working knife.

thx - cpr

I always looked down on 440A until I got my first Blur, which had it. Kershaw does a very good heat treat, and I've changed my opinion of the steel. I guess I just never have had it on a quality knife before.

On the other hand the Blur has been made in some pretty high end steels too. I like them all, and they make a fun collection. Blurs also have been made in S30V, CPM 154 ( powdered 154cm), Takefu's excellent Super Gold 2, and the sandvik steels. Every one is excellent, and a great way to have fun comparing the different qualities of these steels in the same knife.

The S30V, and CPM 154 runs are still available and are very decently priced for the quality. Enjoy your knife!

Well I don;t feel so bad..normally i would have held out for a 13c26 blade but the price was cool so i went for it...i am sure it will be a welcome addition..starting to convert my gerbers and crkt and others to kershaw and benchmades!!!!

Oh, from what I remember they had a brown handle. i've seen the black and the red handled ones frequently. I think they where around $120 Canadian. Looked like a nice knife though. Tks for the confirmation.
