Kershaw Blur Detent hole?

Im think about converting my Black Kershaw Blur with silver G10 into a manual knife, but i don't know if there is a detent hole. I thought the Leek had a detent hole since it had a ball detent so i took the torsion bar out. The blade had no dentent hole for the ball detent, so it had bad handle retention. Even by tightening the screw with locite i could just flop the blade out of the handle. I ended up taking the blade apart and making my own hole. Has anyone taken their torsion bar out of thier blur to make it a manual knife? How is the handle retention?

I did not remove the torsion bar in mine, but it has broken a couple times. There is a detent for the ball bearing, so it does function as a manual knife when the torsion bar breaks (or is removed), but the blade isn't nearly as secure in the handle as it is with the speedsafe mechanism intact.

Hope that helps!

The detent is activated in that model so you can take the torsion bar out and be fine. Its not quite as good as with the spring but its certainly as good if not better than a lot of knives sold from other manufacturers so I'm sure you'll be fine.

So the ball detenet serves a purpose in the Kershaw Blur but not on the leek?

Usually if it has a lock on the model near the tip to hold the blade down when the blade is closed my observation is that its going to have a ball in the lock to aid smooth action so the blade rolls nicely but it won't be activated. Models like the Chive, Scallion, Leek all have a lock on the rear of the folder. On models like the Blur that does not have a lock for the tip the ball is active and can work to hold the blade closed in conjunction with the spring or without. I'm not saying this is a written in stone rule or anything but its been my observation. I can't say at this writing that I have handled all models of Kershaw assisted openers to say for certain but that appears to be the way they are doing it.

OK i understand now, thanks for the info.

Not sure about the Blur, but my Avalanche looks to have a useless ball on the lock. Usually you can see if the ball detent is actually doing something when you're closing the knife. When you're closing it, the lock bar will be pushed all the way against the scale. Then when you completely close it, the ball will fall into place and move away from the scale a little bit.

The Avalanche's lock bar doesn't move away from the scale when it is completely closed which leads me to believe that the ball on the lock doesn't do anything.

It is there merely for the blade to ride on when opening and closing.

Some spring assisted models will have a BB detent hole drilled into the blade, and some don`t. As mentioned, the Blur does, and it will function fine without the spring. Here are a couple that I can think of off hand that DO have a detent hole drilled into the blade tang, and will work without the spring.

BB detent hole drilled into the blade tang:
Blur
ZT0400

BB detent hole not drilled into the blade tang:
Shallot
Leek
Scallion
Chive
Ti Tyrade
ZT0300

These are just some I am familiar with and I`m sure others can add to the list.
