Kershaw Blur or Kershaw Piston?

Sorry if this has been asked before...

I'd be using it for EDC, not for self defense or hard use. I like the way the Blur looks, and to be honest I wanted one a long time ago but never got around to it and gradually forgot about it. But I dislike how the liner seems pretty thin. Although like I said, I'm not planning on working it hard so a lock failure is unlikely.

I like the thicker liners on the Piston and the more pronounced guard, making it less likely for your hand to slip up on the blade. It looks like it would be easy to do that with the Blur.

Anyway I was just wondering what people who have used either or both thought.

I hate being a broken record on the forum, but Blur in Elmax all the way...

As it is, i have never slipped with mine, and it holds quite well. I doubt you would be sad with either, but since you asked for input. ;)

Blur all the way. I have owned both, the Piston is much bigger than it looks. You don't have to worry about your hand slipping off of the Blur's handle, the "tac track" is great. Furthermore, the Blur can be had in many different configurations and color combinations. Kershawguy has some great deals on quiet a few Blurs, factory fresh or blem. I'm a fan of the s30v Blur myself.

+1 for the Blur. Great knife for the price. I'd go with the S30V one.

The Blur has been one of my favorites for sometime, good solid knife. Be careful who you listen to about lock failure, I have sold thousands of blurs and never had a complaint of lock failure. Get one and enjoy it !

It comes down to personal preference. I am planning to get a Piston once I get a chance to handle one and verify it's really what I want. For me, I prefer a straight blade to a recurve, and I really like the flipper feature. I have a Knockout and absolutely love it; you may want to check that one out too. The Piston is similar to the Knockout, but slightly larger. It is also larger than the Blur.

Here are the main differences.

Blur vs Piston
Recurve vs Straight blade
Aluminum vs G10 handle
Non-flipper vs flipper
3.4 in. vs 3.5 in. Blade length
4.5 in. vs : 5 in. Closed length
7.9 in. vs 8.5 in. Overall length:
3.9 oz. vs 4 oz. Weight

For my preferences, the only thing the Blur has better than the Piston is the aluminum handle. YMMV.

I would definitely handle a Piston before I committed if you like the Knockout. I was in the same boat. I loved my Knockout and the Piston looks pretty darn similar but, I was un-pleasantly surprised when I got a Piston.

I would say Blur in Elmax all day long over the Piston. It is a heck of a value for what you get. Plus the ergos on the Blur line are pretty well thought out. I had several Blurs and am down to one now but I think I am going to pick another up. It is also worth noting that the grind on the regular Blur line is a little different than the special runs that they do like the Blue Twill S30v or the Elmax which to me gives them a slightly thicker tip.

Also just to throw something else out there to have a look at, the Camber is a pretty great knife. It is a little smaller than the Blur, no recurve (some dont like recurve blades), has Trac-Tec for grip, and comes in S30v steel. IMO Kershaw hit a home run with it.

Another side note: Kershawguy (Dave) has several Blur variations on his site and I highly recommend him. Pleasure to deal with, super fast, and always friendly!

I appreciate your input. Yeah, I'm fairly new to good knives, so I do not buy without handling one first. I'm picky about how it feels in my hand. I may check out the Camber as well. Another one I'm interested in the the CRKT Ripple, but it's tip down only, so I can pretty much all but rule it out.

Blur is a great choice. One of my favorite designs. Do be careful though, as Blurs have a tendency to multiply. ;)
