Kershaw Blur = Pants eater?

Hi all. I am looking into getting the Kershaw Blur, grey aluminum handles, black Trac-Tec inserts and the 440A straight tanto blade. I went and looked at a Blur and thought the inserts were exceptionally rough. I have read that with use the roghness wears down. My question is, will this knife chew up my pants or clothing?

Thanks

I have a kershaw storm with the same type of inserts. The roughness does wear down, and also the inserts are recessed into the handle far enough that I never had any problems with it chewing up my pockets.

First off, the Kershaw Blur with the grey aluminum is S30V, not 440A. The black ones are 440A. I have both. I have many knives and I have always liked the Blur. When it can out in S30V, I had to have one. I carry it about 25% of the time. To me, it's a great knife in S30V and the placement and design of the thumb studs really make the Speed Safe shine.

Concerning the "pants eater" question. If you leave the clip as it is (tip down carry) it has not been a problem for me, but I wear jeans all the time. For Dockers or similar pants, it may be a problem because the material is not as tough. The bottom part of the clip rests on aluminum so that's cool. The upper portion has enough aluminum exposed so that the grip tape does not grind against the pocket top.

I perfer tip up carry and can draw this knive and open the blade in less than a second. When reversing the clip for tip up carry, the bottom part of the clip still rests on aluminum but the upper part now had the grip tap rubbing against the top of my pocket. All it took was a few minutes with a Dremel to smooth the grip tape where it touched my pocket top and the problem was solved.

The rest of the tape on the knife will rub on the inside of the pocket somewhat but unless it is your EDS 100% of the time, it is not that big of a problem, in my experience. And (this is the good part) the grip tape helps in providing a knife with an extremely good grip that will not slip, even if wet with water, oil, or blood.

bladeprince, we did do a grey Blur in 440A as a short run exclusive for one our distributors. I believe it was in late 2005.

DJM86 welcome to the forums.

My mistake. I missed that one. I stand corrected.

If that's the case, I highly recommend getting the S30V if you can afford it. I only wish it came in a plain blade.

Bladeprince - Thank you for all of the info. I saw this knife, Kershaw Blur, Grey Aluminum Handles, Black Trac-Tec Inserts, 440A straight Tanto blade on ebay for around $50 + $10 for s&h, approximately. Good Deal? I really liked the look of it.

Can this knife be purchased in the above configuration but with the S30V blade?

Thanks again

If it is new, it's a pretty good deal but the shipping is a little high. This site has it brand new for $53 and less shipping cost.

There are also very good prices New Graham.

I think that at this time S30V is only available in a combo drop point blade but you might check the Kershaw web site to be sure. If Thomas W is still watching this thead, he can answer your question since he works (owns ??) for Kershaw.

While tanto points are strong, I'm not a big fan because they are not as practical. Also, an S30V drop point is far better in every way then a 440A tanto, anyday.

The short run of S30V Blur's does only come in a combo-edge, as that is how it was ordered from the distributor.

bladeprince, I am just am a loyal employee (National Sales Manager) of Kai USA, not the owner.

DJM86, if you want a Blur and the S30V is a limited edition, I highly recommend you grab one while you can.

Yeah, I wanted the tanto mainly just for looks. I do not own a tanto blade and want one for the collection. But, I will defintely consider the S30V blade now that I know they are out there. Thanks!!

Thomas W - What configurations does the Black handled Blurs with the aluminum inserts come in? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I'm not Thomas but the if you want the S30V, it has the grey aluminum. All the others are 440A. This web page has all the models. Click the pictures for more details....

I carry a black Blur in my right pocket every day, and so far, it has not eaten my pants. I figure the Trac-Tec inserts will help me hang on to the knife if it ever becomes slippery with... any sort of fluid.
