Kershaw Blur problem

A coworker wanted to clean out the dust and lint inside the casing of his Blur, so he ran a disinfecting wipe through there. After doing so his opening assist no longer works. The assist will only open the blade 90 degrees. How is this possible? My only guess is maybe the wipes dried it out and it is essentially unlubed now.

More likely some fuzz from the disinfecting wipe got jammed in the hinge area. Take it apart and clean it for real.

The torsion bar only directly propels the blade open about 90 degrees. The rest is just the momentum of the blade swinging it into the open & locked position. Perhaps something is preventing that?

Did he perhaps over-tighten the pivot (assuming he took it apart or loosened it)? If so, try adjusting that. If he just ran the wipe through the handle, it's possible he just pushed all the lint up into the pivot area. You can try loosening and flushing it out with hot water (not boiling - just hot water from the tap). Caveat about the latter is that water could get in the cavity in the handle with the torsion bar. It should be pretty well greased up, so it may be fine (handle is aluminum, but the torsion bar and cover plate are steel).

Good info guys. I appreciate it. From the sounds of things, it seems he may have pushed some debris into the hinge.

I passed that info on, and he's asked me to take it apart and clean it up for him. I've never disassembled a knife with a torsion bar before. Any do's or don'ts? I'd assume do it blade open.

Yes blade open first or you'll put an eye out. Pretty simple after that. If you get hung up, there are videos for assembly. Just search the tube. Good luck.

Awesome. I'll check that out. One final question now that I'm thinking of it. What is recommended as far as lube? I have some TW25 laying around from my Sig. I'd imagine that'd be sufficient.

The Milcomm should work great. With Speedsafe knives, just about any oil will work nicely, as it's the torsion bar that launches the blade.

If you haven't taken apart knives to work on, you might also consider putting some masking/painter's tape over the edge, just to reduce accidental knicks and cuts.

Well, I diagnosed the problem. Got the knife home and disassembled it followed Kershaw's hot to video on youtube. After getting it apart, I found that the torsion bar had come out of position at the handle end, and was rubbing on the inside of the handle causing the binding. Inside you can see the wear in the finish where the torsion bar was off track. Just to be 100% safe and to ensure that was in fact the problem, and that was not a blemish from factory, I cleaned the knife thoroughly, relubed, and reassembled. Same problem, and thought it was mostly open under it's own momentum. I attribute that to the fresh lube job. It doe how ever make a scraping noise when opening/closing. When closed you can see the inner plate flexed outward where the torsion bar is jumping track under tension.

Suck for my buddy as this knife is only about a month old. Hope my description makes sense.

Just like you said. Sounds like the torsion bar end isn't in the pocket it should sit down in. I've had just what you described happen before. Disassemble and reseat it and try again making sure the little end doesn't slip out. If I recall correctly, the spacer closest to the blade holds the torsion bar cover on. I'd get that one set first as it helps keep the torsion plate down and the end from riding along in the larger pocket. Not a defect, just needs assembled properly which can be a bit tricky when you have to get both torsion bar ends set and reassemble keeping them in place.

Yes I had this happen to me when I deassisted/reassisted my blur. One thing I read after I did mine, which I think would be helpful is to get the torsion bar properly seated in its "cubbyhole" and then put the cover plate on and place a piece of masking tape over the plate to hold it on. Make sure there is enough hanging off the scale so that you can grip it when the knife is reassembled. This will hold the torsion bar and plate in place while you reassemble the knife, then pull off the tape.

As far as lubing goes, I hear good things about Benchmades Blue Lube. I would recommend nano-oil, but I fail to see the hype for nano-oil...my knives still feel the same
