So I got one off ebay and I got a blackwash model off amazon.

The older model off ebay feels like it has grip tape, the newer one off amazon seems to have a different material that protrudes more from the handle, is that a change kershaw made? I like the older better that sits more low profile and does not feel as much like rubber.

I also see that they make a S30V model, How hard is S30V to sharpen, Im not the best at sharpening and I hear it is difficult to work with.

Hey brother. I've had a few Blurs in my time, currently a desert sand blem.

Anyways, older Blurs definitely used grip tape, and with the more recent models Kershaw decided to go with what they call Trac Tek, which is a more rubberized-type insert. I like it just fine, and they don't chew up your pockets that much.

As far as the S30V, Kershaw runs it moderately hard. It's not really a pain to sharpen, and it holds it's edge pretty well. Either way, Blurs are excellent knives and you'll be taken care of.

Kershaw did change the insert material a while back. Not sure exactly when though.

In my opinion and only my opinion, S30v is a bit over rated. It takes more effort to sharpen but I have not noticed it holding an edge drastically longer plus the extra expense.

It depends on what you use it for. In my experience, it gets a bit dull then stays pretty sharp a long time.

They have used many steels in the Blur line. CPM 154, S60 (CPM 440V), SG2, are some off the top of my head. Most of the S60V were seconds. There were only 6 or 7 maybe from that batch that weren't seconds that made it into the wild. If you have one of the non seconds in S60V you must have some good kharma built up. Even just having money won't guarantee you finding one for a blur collection. They also had some others like "West coast choppers" or one of those type things that came in a tin. Nice setup! There are a lot of blurs and a collection of just blurs would still be pretty substantial. I'm getting old. Anybody know if they made a ZDP 189 run of Blurs? Seems like I recall them doing it. I know my SG2 was laminated with the line, brown scales like the S60V.

They also make an Elmax Blur in both stonewash and blackwash.

The choppers Blur was the "Orange County Choppers" Blur. Red spiderweb pattern and it did come in a collectible tin.

They recently did a Carpenter BDZ-1 in both serrated tanto and plain edge tanto.

Here's my modest collection of Blurs

whats the best way to sharpen the recurve portion of the blade?

I've had good luck with Lansky's Turnbox. A spyderco sharpmaker is an upscale take on the same principle that many folks like. Or there's the KME sharpener with the rounded tri-hone. Expensive but makes getting a wicked edge on a blade a snap as long as you follow the instructions to the letter.

Thanks Tom and Mets Fan. I have one of those tins unopened I won in a giveaway here. It's somewhere "safe" and I couldn't see the name. I thought I remembered a ZDP model being released.

Yeah, the ZDP version was released as a composite blade.

There is an SG2 version with a laminated blade.

Anyone looking to get into collecting Blurs, be sure to have your wallet ready, especially for the blue, purple and gray variants...those are some of the rarest around.

How do you like the SG2? Is yours a user? If so, how does it perform compared to S30V for example? The Blur is such an underrated knife for those not familiar with Kershaw knives and IMHO could never be overrated. Personally, I carry the BDZ-1 version and loving it so far.
