I am hoping that some of you better educated folks can answer a few basic questions for me. I am really a slip-joint kind of guy and know next to nothing about modern folders.
I recently traded for a like new Kershaw Blur with a Krein Regrind as I thought it might make a pretty good woods walking/out door use folder. I think that I was right. It fits my hand like a glove and is super comfortable to use and it slices and cuts like a laser.
My questions are what happens when or if the assisted opening mechanism fails? Will it still perform like a normal liner lock or will I be left holding a nonfunctional knife?
The knife locks up very nice and seems to be nice and tight yet when the blade is locked open there is a very slight rattle coming from the pivot area. I assume that it is the A/O making the noise. Is this normal?
I was told that the blade is made from S90V and this is a steel that I have not heard of and know nothing about. Can anybody give me the basics on this type of steel. Also looking around on line I have not been able to find any other Blurs for sale with S90V. Does that make it an older production model or one of a special run?
Thanks in advance for your help and I hope that these questions haven't been beat to death. I tried doing some basic searches but wasn't able to answer my questions. Thanks again.

The Blur is a great knife. If the A/O spring fails, call Kershaw and they will send you a new one. They are easy to install. The rattling you're hearing is the spring moving around inside the milled out area of the handle. There is grease in there to prevent that from happening but as the spring moves around it pushes the grease to the outside of the cavity and a rattle develops. The knife can be taken apart easily and all you have to do is put some lithium or other heavier grade grease in there and the rattle will stop.

I doubt your Blur is S90V. It is probably S60V. What color is the handle?

EDIT: I didn't answer your question as to what would happen if the A/O failed. If it does and you do not replace the spring, it will lock up and function like a manual knife.

Thanks alot for the quick reply morrowj_98. Glad to hear that my Blur will function without the A/O. I figured that it would but it never hurts to ask. The little rattle isn't a big deal to me I was mosty just ccurious.
My Blur is a dull army green with black grippy inserts. Why do you doubt that it is S90V? If it is S60V what is your opinion of that blade steel.
Thanks again for the information.

No problem...glad to help.

There were two blurs released with green handles...one with an S60V blade and one with CPM-154. There were only 15 of the S60V versions sold. There were however a bunch of "blems" or factory 2nds of the S60V version sold. I have an S60V version with a Krein regrind as well.

Does yours look like this one? This one is mine pictured with a untouched S60V Blur blem.

Mine looks exactly like yours. Awesome! S60V it is then. I will do a search and read up on S60V and learn I'm sure more than I need to know.:D I am likeing this Blur more and more.
Only 15 sold is a ridiculously low number. Can you tell me the story on that? Also is there anyway for me to know if mine is one of the fabulous 15 or a factory second?

13 are locked up tighter than a bullfrogs ass. :D One was sold on ebay for
around $400...I think. Thomas W. has #15 and I doubt it's going anywhere.

Your's is a blem.....trust me. ;)

Kershaw had some left over S60V and did a run with it on the Blur.
Something was off on the line causing blade grind issues leaving
just 15 without this issue.

Enjoy your new Blur!!

Ah the rest of the story. It's a great knife and one I am sure to get lots of use out of. Thanks guys for the info, I just new my questions would be answered, and have a great weekend.

Shouldn't it have XXXX on the blade if it's a blem? Or did they start doing that later on?

I will keep you guys in mind should I need to take it apart. For now I'm just gonna use it. Thanks again for answering my questions morrowj_98 and thank you svrider3 for the rest of the story. You guys are awesome.

i know your question were answered bu ti just wanted to add thatthe blur makes a great manual folder. if you remove the ao torsion bar, it works very well. i prefer to use mine this way. i didn't know the rarity of s60v blurs....anyone know why they are locked up? just because theres so few?

Just meant the owners more than likely have them stored as
safe queens. Acually, I know most of the owner's and know
they have them locked up tighter then a bullfrogs ass. ;) :D

DropPoint,
That's good to know. How hard is it to turn it into a manual -- and how do you do it?

It is not very hard at all. as long as you have the proper size torx bits to take apart the knife, you can do it. once you have the knife apart, all you need to do is remove the steel liner from the scale without the liner lock. underneath is the torsion bar. you just pull it straight up and thats it. if you want, you can clean out the grease that will be in there but its not neccessary. then reassemble the knife and you're good to go. i hope this helps.

My only hang up on my Blur was the what happens when the A/O craps out. Now that concern has been put to rest and it is gonna make a great user for me. I am really happy with it and as you can probably tell excited about having it.
Learning the history/story of the S60V Blurs is just a really cool bonus.

Dekz is absolutely correct. All blem S60V Blurs should have XXXX etched on the right side of the blade. See, just like these.........wait, what happened to the X's on the bottom one?!?
