Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section, but I figure that you can just about never go wrong with posting in a general forum. Going to keep it short and to the point.

I just got the 14C28N version of the Kershaw Blur Tanto and was wondering if it'd be good for "tactical" uses. Currently I am in the fire/ems application process and am going to be applying for the police department in a couple of months and I just wanted to make sure that this knife is a good suit for these tasks. I was told to go out and get a solid knife and when I went to my local store and talked to the knife sales guy he originally recommended the SOG Trident Tanto, but the quality seemed far from a SOG and I couldn't put my trust in it and the guy agreed once he noticed it, then he recommended the Kershaw Blur Tanto which seemed a lot better quality wise so I got it. Just wanted to get y'all's input on it and see what knives y'all would recommend if its not up to the tasks.

Thanks

I'd suggest looking at the ZT line. Maybe look at the Spyderco Manix 2.

There's going to be an avalanche of suggestions...:D

Eh, I'm not so sure about the tanto blur. The tip is REALLY weak and could snap off with pressure, Also the serrations are very deep and tend to snag on what you're cutting.

Have you looked at zero tolerance knives? Very sturdy knives no matter what model but are a bit more cash than the trident or blur.

Here's my zero tolerance 0200

Welcome to the forums!

Zero Tolerance are great, solid knives. But for police duty? Are you kidding? Way too heavy and bulky. Spyderco Military or Police model are as big as I would go. No one can argue the Tanto is not a good tactical choice. Think about it though. What are the times used in the tactical role vs utility going to be? You're going to be using your knife far more in a utility roll and the blade shape should reflect that.

You do realize that neither the police or military are small right?

Yes, that should work fine. Suggestions like the Manix 2 or ZT 0200 are about as good as you can get. But if a non-knife-enthusiast told you to get a "solid knife," the Blur is probably above and beyond what they had in mind. Kershaw knives are well-made, and if you ever break something on it, you can send it in and they'll fix it for free. If you're looking to upgrade, though, ZT (which is related to Kershaw) is the toughest there is, and carries the same customer support backing.

You do realize that both the police and the military have smaller profiles and weigh less that the ZTs right?

The ZT 0350 is about as thin as the millie and is .6 ounces heavier than the millie and .2 ounces lighter than the police. and if the guy wants a tanto, He could go for the 0400 which weighs the same as the police. I dont see how they are bad for LE use. I have been carrying a ZT 0200 (7.7 ounces) for well over a month now and the weight has never given me a problem, although i'm not carrying as much as an officer.

I love spydercos just as much as i do kershaws and ZTs. I just thought the ZTs fit a more tactical role.

I agree with you in terms of ZTs being great knives for LEO use. I was just stating that they are a bit bulkier than the Military and the Police, which would both suit his needs as well.

What do you mean by "tactical," anyway? Do you mean you're going to use it to covertly de-animate the terrists like Jack Bauer with it? In any case the blur has as many useless "tactical" features as you're going to need or want.

If you're looking for a hard use or working knife, though, I'd probably look elsewhere. The Tanto Blur I had had a very weak lock - it was the only knife of mine I've had close on my hand due to lock failure, and that's hardly ideal if you're going to end up wailing on one. The serrations are more useless than most, and the hollow-ground tanto tip is extremely fragile. While it's nice and easy to open, I found it was a pain to operate the liner lock with gloved hands. Otherwise it has a comfortable handle and makes an OK every day knife, but I'd recommend a Spyderco Manix 2 or maybe a Cold Steel American Lawman over the Blur for a hard use knife.

It works great for deanimating Cold Steel wielding Korean mobsters!

Yes , the Tanto Blur will suit you just fine. The only thing I would worry about it what the one poster said about serrations getting caught. I own the very same knife , mine will not get caught because they are as sharp as I can keep them , if you can manage the same feat then you should be ok. What were saying by this is , if you wind up using he knife for general chores and let the serrations dull then the day comes you have to cut a seatbelt you might have a hard time.
However !! that is sort of a moot point since any knife that you get with serrations is not going to work if you let them get dull , so what really matters is that you famaliarize yourself with keeping your knife nice and sharp.

All that said , enjoy your Blur , it is a top quality knife from the best production knife company there is. :)

The Blur is a great knife, the Tanto blur is a pretty good knife but the tip is too thin. I bent the tip on mine easily and seen two other that way. I would get the regular blk/blk blur or the S30V version if you dont mind not having a black blade.

ZT has a lot of tough knives I would take a close look at those... ZT 0350 has thin profile, is assisted, has a black S30V blade and has a flipper.

Middle one is 0350

I don't see the big deal about a few ounces of a knife when you are already carrying a lot of weight with vest, gun, tazer, magazines, flashlight, cuffs, pens, notepad, radio, keys. I'd be more concerned with the shape and profile of the knife and how it will fit in the pockets and the ease of drawing and using the knife... IMHO
