So, my girlfriend bought me a kershaw blur with a 13c26n blade last year for christmas (08). My question is, i'm used to using 01, 154cm & zdp189. How will the 13c26n hold up to use as far as getting damaged whether it's from a staple, hitting it on a glass top by accident, whittling a stick with dirt/sand on it. I love the knife and the fact that she got it for me, but i don't want to bugger the blade up if it's not needed. I carry it or my caly3 zdp with me when i dress up, so it's not like i put it in the back of the closet.

It gets scratches pretty easily. The edge will get dented a little bit if you hit metal, but I don't think it will chip or anything serious. I smacked mine on a metal dumpster on accident, and the edge dent came out in a couple sharpenings.

Haha, folds and chips bug the crap out of me. I like a perfect edge, but that's what this forum did to me. Turned me into a nut! I'd mainly use it when fishing & hunting (not to clean game), to whittle in the woods, cut rope, zip ties and stuff around the house and whatever else. I don't abuse my knives, but the edges do come in contact with dirt and sand around here because i live on the shoreline. Never know what i'll need to cut. Is it a safe go? I'm annoying in the sense that i'll put a ton of knives away, start thinking about them and then take them back out. haha i have a table that i have a bunch of knives layed out on along with my watch, phone, ipod, flashlight and whatever else i need and the knives change every so often. The ones i take out and put away most often are the blur, griptilian, the benchmite II and the buck 110/kershaw wildcat ridge (depending).

I carried a RAM in 13C26 and used it as a work knife for about a year, it can stand up to some dirty work, just make sure to wipe the blade off before you put it back in your pocket and you shouldn't have too many concerns.

What else is there? You either fold or you chip - take your pick. If you get something like ZDP-189, it will tend to micro-chip rather than fold. If you get VG-10, it'll tend to fold rather than chip out.

Folding is easier to sharpen (minus the burr; the burr can make it even more of a pain to sharpen)

I hear that 13C26 was upgraded to 14C28N because of corrosion issues. Well just yesterday, I got soaked in a water balloon fight, and I had my JYD with 13C26 on me. When I got home 1.5 or 2 hours later, I took my knife off of my pocket. I opened the blade, and there were beads of water all over it. I wiped it, and there wasn't even a hint of discoloration.

It's good stuff, in my opinion.

What about the initial edge? How does that hold up to dings and dents?

The initial edge is going to depend on who sharpened it... And each blade is sharpened by hand by a human being.

It holds up to dings and dents the same way I said it did in my first reply to this thread ;)

I've sharpened out both folds and chips, and prefer the folds for obvious reasons lol. I'm not worried about rust i keep my blades clean. I love my zdp-189 because it doesnt get damaged easy, where as softer steels you can make less mistakes with.

That's true. I've said before when talking about ZDP-189 that I've accidentally smacked it on a dumpster, and there was absolutely no edge damage. My VG-10 Delica and 13C26 Junkyard Dog, on the other hand, both got a dent in the edge after suffering the same accident.

That said, steel doesn't make a huge difference to me anymore. I go by design nowadays.

The sandvik steels that Kershaw uses are fairly wear resistant steels actually. I once used a 13c26 OD-1 to cut two whole frozen pizza boxes into small strands, probably 1" by 1/4" and after both were made into little pieces it would still shave arm hair. Thats pretty impressive IMO, especially for the price that their sandvik knives go for.

Also, one time I accidentally and studpidly hit a metal bar that was surrounding a table with a 14c28n speed bump with a ton of force and there was no noticeable damage done to the blade. Their sandvik steels blow everything else in their price range out of the water in my opinion, especially the 14c28n with its higher Rc.
