Was thinking about getting the Kershaw Blur and was wondering why it doesn't have a lock to keep it closed. Won't it open up when in your pocket?

Also what's the advantge of the tanto style blade? Sorry I'm new at knifes.

I've had the Blur for a little over a year now I think, and I haven't had it unintentionally open up on me yet. Even though the Speed Safe action is strong, it does take a lil bit of intentional force on the thumb stud in a particular direction to open it up. I've had buddies who have never opened up a Speed Safe knife, and I tried telling them what direction to push the stud, and how hard, and they just can never seem to open it unless you push out at a particular angle. As for the tanto style blade, I believe it makes for a stronger tip, although I could be wrong, I'd take a look at this EDC knives info page, it's a great piece of information on knives. http://www.edcknives.com/vcom/knife_knowledge.php?osCsid=3bef61c1806cf7be6db1a41bf568f9bf

MOst all folders lack a lock to keep them closed. A well made folder will have an amount of tension on the closed blade to keep it in place until such a time as you want it open, usually through a ball detent. Tanto tips are of an advatage on a sword, thats about it. MOst people dont use there small pocket folder for stabbing steel barrels so it play little role in the scheme of things. Most of us speculate that tanto tips are popular because they look cool. I have always liked the look but preffer a more udefull tip shape liiek a drop point.

Speed safe knives do not have a detent ball to keep them closed. The torsion spring tension works as the detent mechanism. There are a few that do not have a safety, Blur, Avalanche, Bump(original) Offset, ZT0300's. I don't mind the lack of safety, except on the Offset, and Bump, since they are tip down only. I've never heard of an instance that one opened in the pocket, but I bike ride and hike a lot, and am wary of the possible opening from jarring. The others? I just would switch them to tip up, no problem.

The auto mechanism holds the blade closed. Don't need a second lock.

If there is a functional advantage to the tanto, most of us have been unable to figure it out. It's a style. Some people like the appearance.

Sorry Thomas. I apologise. "assisted opener" is the correct term.

The tanto style blade is designed to penetrate with a broader blade style than a stiletto or dagger. It is not a designed well liked by LEOs as they are capable of cuttting through many vests designs and they are not as easy to sharpen anyway. I would get the standard blade design. The Blur is great ( I have five) and the tension of the liner lock keeps it closed.
