You would probably be better off finding a knife that you like with Carbon Fiber or G-10 scales already on it - custom scales for a Cryo will likely cost you much more than the knife is worth.

IMO a bigger issue is that the Cryo is already boat-anchor heavy for its size and adding a scale would just increase that weight. Also, by design doesn't have a scale to begin with--not that a scale couldn't be added, but it would have to make the knife asymmetrical, thicker on non-lock side.

As for custom upgrades costing more than the knife itself, I'm not against that if the finished package is what I want. I'd happily pay more than the price of a BM 707 to have CF scales made for it, if that was an option. Hmm, I wonder if that would work . . .

I believe the OP is talking about a scale to replace the metal one containing the spring assist, keeping the whole package the same size with less weight.
I have seen a few Cryos that people have made G10 scales to replace the metal ones. Some had milling so the spring assist could still be used, some didn't.
AFAIK no one is selling them, but maybe some makers would be willing to do one for you.

Well, I'm not sure I'd be excited about someone messing with the assist side myself, but at least that would make for a lighter knife. I suppose doing away with the mechanism altogether would also get rid of that annoying patented Kershaw SpeedSafe rattling noise too.

I like the Cryo, but it's a tank. It's only a half ounce lighter than a 710, which is a metric crap ton more knife . . .

The nice thing about carbon fiber and G10 is that they can be shaped with hand tools.

It would take some time, but it is possible to make scales yourself.

Take your cryo apart, clamp the scale up against your new material, and trace the pattern. The Cryo scales are flat on the "blade side", so that's easy. Use a hand drill and you can drill straight through the existing screw holes without worrying about reaming them out. A hacksaw blade will cut either material, and you can use files and sandpaper to finish up.

Make sure you have good light.

Wear a dust mask. If it says "N95" on it, or even a higher number, that's good. The dust from either material is bad for your lungs.

Weight is the big issue with this knife, so I'm not trying to add a scale to the existing metal slab. I'm in fact looking for a CF scale to replace it. I'd like to keep the speed safe, but it's by no means a deal killer.

Don at Gator Scales makes them... Gatorscales@gmail.com

I love the G10 scale on my Cryo. Sure it costs around the same as the knife to get made, but it reduces the weight by about an ounce and really increases grip.

I made two scales for the cryo that my wife has. All I have left is to mill out the spot for the assist .They are Od green canvas. If it has a detent which I wasnt looking at the time. I might make hers manual. But its not too too hard to keep it. I just finished my own, micarta chive and its pretty darn cool. I will look for pics.

Yep Don Smith at Gator Scales makes some nice ones. Once I've got some cash to spare I'll probably order some from him. In the US I think they're $40 shipped.

Well holy damn! I came in here specifically to ask if there were any recommendations for a Cryo-ish assisted folder with G10 scales. Looks like I got my answer. :D

LOL yeah I'll probably get one as my new beater blade. It would've been even sweeter for me if they made the G10 version with the Blackwash blade. They've got the blackwash versions in the regular and new tanto blade versions now.

They're cheap enough that you can FrankenCryo it!!!

Haha gotta love Bladeforums!

The craziness of the timing is off the charts. I carried my Cryo for the first time in months today and every time I pulled it out of my pocket I wanted it to have G10 scales to knock the weight down a bit and give it some better grip.

In the meantime I just ordered a Thermite to tide me over. :D

If they ever do a blue G10/blackwash like they did with the Skyline...

 Love this idea. The Cryo becomes Barbie for Boys... or is that what the AR-15 platform already is? :D

Haha excellent! Let me know what you think of the Thermite when you get it. I've been meaning to pick one up.
