Anyone have any experience with kershaw's damascus, i.e. how does it compare with with higher end cutlery steels like vg-10 and s30v or even other damascus. I am looking at a skyline in damascus for around $60. This seems a little to inexpensive and I just want to make sure that the damascus used is a good solid performer.

It performs better than AUS6 and 440A. It is actually quite a solid steel for EDC, but comparing a damascus blade (I think of almost any kind) to the high end steels isn't going to really work...

Kershaw uses Alabama damascus, and it's awesome. Like most damascus blades, keep it oiled and it will serve you well.

Thanks I appreciate the information. I don't have any experience with damascus of any kind.

I've seen a few posts with this question, and have wondered myself. It's somewhat hard to discern but almost seems there is an unwillingness to give this particular damascus a lot of credit in terms of edge holding potential. It is made from three of the better carbon/tool steels out there: 52100, 5160, and 15N20. These steels don't have the "sex appeal" of the current batch of super steels, but do not underestimate them. They may not be "uber steels", but given Kershaw's heat treatment process and the proven track record of carbon steels in this application, you can be certain this damascus will perform better than most stainless- it should do far better than aus-6 or 440a. IMHO, it should perform better than most of the mid-grade stainless (probably better than most). I'd be willing to bet it would do as well as VG-10, maybe better.
