Hi, I would like to purchase one of the inexpensive kershaw emersons. Which one is the best and why? There are so many that I have no clue which one is good.

CQC-5K or 6K, depending on what size knife you want. The 5K is a liner lock, so it's a bit more like the ones direct from Emerson. It actually seems a lot like the Micro Commander, both in size and handle shape (different blade shape). The 6K sort of looks like the M-Wave handle, but also a different blade shape. Both have excellent ergonomics and feel very robust in hand.

The CQC-7K is the same handle as the 6K, but with a tanto blade instead. The 4K looks pretty nice as well, but I haven't handled one yet. There's also the upcoming CQC-4K-XL, which will sport a nearly 4" blade. Not sure when that's coming out, but that will be a larger, beefy folder.

I would recommend the 6K out of the lineup. I bought one as a gift for a friend and it seems to be a great intro to the Emerson style. IMO it has the most practical blade shape and I love that it's a frame lock, though it does seem to be a bit tough to open for my right handed friends using the thumb disk.

XL cqc 4k ? Very interesting. Any links or info?

Don't buy any of them. They literally snap closed from the halfway position. CQC-4K nearly de-fingered me. And it was the most useful (and used) finger, the middle.

I reviewed a neat little E/K CQC-8K I picked up a month or so ago. Neat little knife, wicked edge. It now lives in the car door pocket in case I need an emergency blade. Good value for the money.

I had the 6k and it was a nice knife for the price. I didn't keep it because it was smaller than my liking. I will likely pick up the 4KXL when it comes out.

IMO, the 6k and 7k have the best ergonomics, size, and aesthetics. Of the two, I think the 6k has the most utilitarian blade shape (clip point, as opposed to tanto on the 7k), both have the same handle, and are the same size (about 3 and 1/4 inch blade).

I have both, and I like them. Great value. Hope this helps.

How did this happen? It's not like they're backlocks or something with spring tension against the blade holding it shut, it's just a framelock with cheap nylon washers

Don't get me wrong, I don't trust cheap folders' in general, just curious what could possibly be unexpected about closing a frame lock
