I am so looking forward to the new Ken Onion Offset with the G-10 handle, that I bought 3 of the original Offsets with the aluminium handle. I do not know anyone who likes the "splatter paint" motif of the Offset's handle, but don't let that keep you away from handling this beautiful knife. There is something about this knife...and you have to have it in your hand to experience it. As my girlfriend says, "I just feel like stabbing something when it's in my hand." (She is VERY foxy, so it doesn't creep me out when she says stuff like that.) There is something to what she says: the handle is somewhat enchanting. I just want to hold it. The first night that I got it, I took it to bed with me. As we watched a movie, I was opening and closing it for an hour or so. When my girlfriend finally figured out what that noise was, she said:
"Did you bring your knife to bed?...You are such a boy!"
I'm lucky that she understands these things.
The blade is inspirering. The 3D of the MIM 440C steel is beyound anything I've seen. From the dual grind edge to the "draped" top edge; it is pure art. The first 2/3s is flat ground with a fair rock to the edge. The last third is hollow ground with a generous recurve that is scary sharp. The steel itself feels like nothing I've ever owned. Almost like space-steel. I feels like it is part ceramic. I don't know if it will break, but I do know that it cuts very well. If you've ever been cut by your own knife you know that chill. This knife oozes that chill. I never take my eye off it.
The Offset employs the Speed Safe A/O with a twist. It has the new Double Pumper, which is a great name for a torsion bar on both sides of the blade in the handle, instead of just one. But the Double Pumper is not just a marketing gimmick; it delivers. Even the Guys with their Microtechs hold their manhood short when the Offset gets passed around and Dude after Dude has to whack this thing open for themselves. It is like a Fat Harley with straight pipes. "BuuWAAPP!"
The lock is a realatively new design called Stud-lock. When open, the thumb studs engauge a shelf at the front top of the frame/handle. At first it seemed a little under-designed, meaning I did not fully trust its reliability. But it is just one of those new ideas that I had to test out myself. Of course it works, and works well. It is not the sort of lock that I would bet my life on, like the frame lock of the Zero Tolerance 0301, but I don't believe that the Stud lock system is asking me to bet my life on it. For EDC it is very convienient. It opens easily, locks up tight, and is great for one handed closing. I love it and will continue to buy knives that use Stud lock.
The clip is wide, shiney, and etched beautifully. I have heard complaints of it being conspicuous. I am not an outlaw, so I don't mind people knowing that I have a knife in my pocket. This knife is an amazing work of art. It is not a tactical fighter, but the knife makes me smile eveytime I see it. I wouldn't take it into the woods with me, but I wouldn't drive a Lincoln on a hunting trip either.
My purchase of three of these knives should be endorsment enough, but let me say that I highly recomend this knife and will be buying the 1597G-10 when it comes out next month. Enjoy.
