Smokey Mountain Knife Works is advertising in their catalog a knife they're calling the "Ken Onion Blizzard Linerlock", model 1540. I checked the Kershaw site, and they don't show anything by this name or model number.

It looks identical to the whirlwind, except the handle is green instead of black. The steel is listed as 440A, but the catalog is still showing the whirlwind as 440A as well. Also, the overlength is listed as 4.5 inches closed vs. 4 3/8ths for the whirlwind.

Is this knife basically identical to the whirlwind? Or is it a budget model? I have a whirlwind, and I like it alot.

The original Blizzard was a manual Whirlwind with green scales. We had some extra green Polyimide material, so we recently used it up with a run of Whirlwinds. Those would be 13C26 blade steel not 440A.

Thanks, Thomas, for your quick reply. So the Blizzard is a manual, ie NOT speed-safe, version of the whirlwind? The reason I ask for a confirmation is that the SMKW catalog lists it as a Speed-safe. It appears that the SMKW people aren't completely on top of the details, in this instance.

It still looks like it's a great knife.

The current ones we made with the additional handle material did include SpeedSafe. I believe SMKW's offerings are AO's.
