I've never been a huge fan of smaller folding knives. Most of mine tend toward 3+ inches, easily. I guess I never thought they were all that useful or some other hair-brained notion.

Anyway, I recently went out hunting for something for my groomsmen. Of course, being a knife knut, I went for something shiney and engraveable. Walking into my local B&M store, I found a few nice Swiss Army Knives for 3 of my guys. However, as that was all they had of them, I looked around for something for my best man.

I ran across the Kershaw Ken Onion Chive. I instantly loved it upon holding and opening it (speed safe rox!). So, picking one up for my best man, I decided that one should find a matching place in my pocket. And it has.

This little knife is really quite cool. It stays sharp, using it just for little EDC tasks...envelopes, tape, string, clothing tags, etc. I really like the small size, but big cutting feel and quick deployment (you never know when you gotta jump one of them pieces of string, or when one will get the drop on you!). It has found a place in my pocket everyday.

I'm still not quite used to the size, so I usually have something bigger (REKAT Pioneer II, CRKT Point Guard, etc) tucked in or strapped on elsewhere.

At the end, I've found that a little knife doesn't always mean little cutting, and that is why size doesn't always matter...well, not for everything.

I love my Chive too. It may seem small to a man, but for me it's just right. I love the design of it, the speed assist opening feature and it's razor sharp factory edge can't be beat! I can't wait to get the Black Chive!

really? theres more? they're coming out with more chives? uh-oh, i better get a second job, or my wife will use a chive to have my hide.

actually, i think i want to get the boa. it seems to have the same features i like on the chive, but in a larger package. mostly, that applies to anything that stops me from hurting myself, like the tang part that sticks through the back of the knife handle as a safer and easier way to start the knife a-movin'.

I cut myself quite well the one time I tried to use the thumb-studs...

Yes, the Black Chive is exactly like the original Chive but is black boron from tip to butt. A lovely blue-black that shimmers. I've only seen a picture of it so far. I believe it was in last month's issue of Blade, but don't quote me on that. My knife connection tells me it will be on the market soon. I'm going to look for it at a gun show I'm going to next weekend!

My little Chive has become my favorite to carry and replaces my Benchmade Ascent. I still love my Benchmade, but this Chive fits me perfectly, so it goes where I go!

Thought you'd like to see it for yourself, so here's the link: Ken Onion Chive Try to control your drooling. It's ****in' GORGEOUS no? Sorry for the expletive, I can't help myself! :D

indeed, that is quite nice. good luck at the show next week finding it. i'll have to keep my eyes peeled, too.

I just got my black Chive from 1sks. I'd already handled the Chive and knew I liked it. I've been wanting to try out boron carbide coatings, so the black Chive seemed like a good choice. It looks fantastic. I'm waiting to see if it's as scratch-resistant as everyone says!

From what I read, it sounds like that BC coating is pretty protective. Let us know what you think of it after you've used it for a while!

I really gotta get one of 'em. I handled one at a local store, and love the Chive. If I can convince my wife that I need yet another knife, it will probably be the Black Boron Carbide coated Chive.

Congrats on your wedding plans, Blackwatch. I know the planning can be a headache, but once it's over the fun begins:D

Thanks.

I actually got married on November 24th.

I just hadn't posted anything here in quite some time.

The wedding was great. All of us men wore kilts, with full attire, including sghin dubgh (black knives) that are worn in the sock. It was great, and I'm so happy i did it. my wife is awesome, and she is learning to appreciate my knife collection...she even does like the chive, but shes not used to the speed safe yet.

Thanks for the congrats. :D

Blackwatch: I would bet that you would love a Boa too. I had a chive and loved it (gave it to a friend) I currently have a Black Boa and love it. the blade isn't as zippy flicking out as the chive but after a good cleaning and lube it's still very fast and opens with a very satisfying whack! (can you say satisfying whack on bladeforums?) the handle is one of my top two most comfortable (the other is the Emerson Mini Commander) the recurve on the boa is perfect for the utility stuff that I do as well. I polished the blade on mine and it looks super cool
