I have the kershaw thermite with 8cr13 mov steel and since I've been on vacation on the west coast I've been having problem with rust, I've been keeping it out of water and I am wondering if it's something I cut when making food or the salt air, has anyone had this problem and does anyone have a suggestion of a cheap oil that doesn't come in a big bottle?

I'd use Flitz polish to take care of the surface rust. Once that is off, you can use an oil of your choice. I use mineral oil but it isn't the absolute best protection against rust, although since you seem to be cutting food with your knife, it is what I would recommend as it is food safe. Just a light coat each evening should serve you well.

Thanks I'll keep my eyes open for that, and I have oil at home that's food safe and wouldn't use anything different

It's supposedly a stainless steel... my experience with kershaw's has been more along the lines of a solid carbon steel. It sharpens easily and takes a nice edge with a coarse stone, but doesn't resist rusting well.

Stainless is not stain proof. 8cr's history of rusting is very well documented. Especially with a bead blasted finish. I think the Thermite is stonewashed though.

Get some Froglube CLP, heat up the blade and then apply it. It is food safe, smells great, works great and actually penetrates to prevent rust. I have not had an issue with rust since using it, the stuff truly is great!

Will Flitz work despite the bead-blast that Kershaw gives their blades? I'm a little hesitant to remove the pitting on my JYD, as I just received it and it's a FPR 1/500; I don't want to alter its finish.
