Would a knife that's halfway between multitool and knife be successful? I've been wishing for a while there was something between the two that I could carry. Take something like a Packrat, Groove, Leek, or Shallot, and add some tool capabilities to it.

Looking at the Spyderco ByrdRench made the think of this and see what people thought, as that tool looks like a compromise between a full multitool like the Sog Powerlock S60 and a knife.

Thoughts?

Im gonna give you my take on two "hybrids". One from a "knife company" and another from a "multi-tool company..."

I like alot of the Byrd Line, but the ByrdRench isnt in the list. That thing is a complicated piece of junk, and its more like a puzzle to get it back together once separated than a functional tool. :thumbdn::thumbdn:

Also, the Skeletool by Leatherman. I LOVE my Leatherman. I like most of the designs I dont own. However, the Skeletool is pretty silly. For the base model (not even factoring the 154CM version), you pay $20 more than the basic multi-tools that actually have MORE tools. Its cool looking, its light weight, its easy to carry, but it has less tools and its harder to use. Couple that with more cost...its a gimmick product.

The only "Hybrid" I have any desire for is the knife made by SureFire, but I sure as heck won't be paying the price tag on that one any time soon.

Buck have a few hybrids out. One with a decent looking set of pliers. I can't say I have used one. It looks a bit gimmicky but might at least be worth checking out on their webpage.

I have to say I liked the look of the Kershaw multi-tool. Its out of productions but it might be a nice time to bring out an upgraded version.

An upgraded Kershaw tool was what I was thinking of, but something thinner and more lightweight than a full multitool. Half the time, I'd be happy to have something with a bladek, scissors, and a flat screwdriver. Make the screwdriver part strong enough to pry things apart without bending the blade and that would cover many scenarios for me. So, what's a minimal set of tools?

Honestly, I wish more knives would have bottle openers on them, along with a screwdriver.
Those are the two I'd use the most.

Once you know the technique, you can open a bottle with a knife, lighter, screwdriver, folded piece of paper, phonebook, flashlight.....you get the idea....

I bought a Leatherman Wave best money I spent in awhile it has a plain and a serrated blade that can be opened one handed and without opening the plier check them out.
