Kershaw Lahar not smooth and disassembly question

I posted this in the general forum and did not get many replies so thought I would cross post it here:

I got a Lahar a few months ago and really like the knife. However, it is far from being a smooth knife to open. It feels almost gritty trying to open. I have loosened and then tightened the pivot to where blade play just goes away and it didn't help much.

If I push on the flipper with hand still I can get the blade to move enough to where the flipper just disappears in the handle. If I do the same with a hard wrist fling it will open.

Has anyone else experienced this or has your knife been fairly smooth?

I was going to disassemble the knife and try to polish the blade around the pivot but the design seems different than most. It seems there is an internal blade stop pin that actually rides in a slot in the blade. It seems like the whole knife has to be taken apart to get the blade out. However, my T6 torx is goofed up so that wont happen until I get another one. Just wondering if anyone has taken one apart and if they had any problems.

Sorry for the lengthy post but I would really like to smooth this baby out. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mine was the same way.

This is one simple knife to take apart. Take it down one layer at a time. Once dissasembled polish the washers with some flitz, clean the pivot out and lube e/t. It goes back together very simply as well. The only trick is getting the stop pin seated. Just seat it on one side, put the other half of the handle back on and use your torx driver to position the pin into the seat on that side. Tighten the handle screws from the back to the blade, then tighten the pivot all the way down with the blade centered. Back the pivot out 1/4 turn or so and enjoy. Once finished this thing should flip like a rocket.

mine does that to, but it doesnt bother me. spiral is right though, it is an easy disasembly. BE CAREFUL though. i had this problem with mine and it gave both Tom Krein and I a huge headache. The screws strip EASILY. be careful of that. if they give you a problem, talk to Kershaw and they will take care of it :D

good luck!

This obviously goes without saying, but if you decide to disassemble the knife yourself please put some masking tape over the edge of the blade so you don't cut yourself. From what I hear, the Lahar has a very sharp blade! ;)

One of the reasons Kershaw has such a great warranty is to prevent you from getting injured trying to fix the knife yourself. Good luck!

Ryan, I take it you like to go Mountain Biking. Perhaps you got some sand in the pivot area while riding? Maybe a good cleaning followed with some lubricant will fix the prob?

(That's what she said!)

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I will go to sears and get my torx bit replaced and work on it this weekend. If that doesn't solve the problem I will send it to kershaw (I have another knife that needs to go back anyways). I was just a little thrown off by the internal blade stop as you can normally remove a blade by just taking the pivot screw out.

Haha giantsfan. Glad I dont have a 'pivot area' to worry about getting sand in! While I used to race bikes for about 7 years I am no longer able to do so because of a blood disorder. It was a good catch but it came like this right out of the box. I actually carry the knife a lot but have only really used it maybe a half dozen times. I always hate goofing up that factory edge but once I do it gets used much more.

Thanks again!

Ryan
