Hi !

The tension / torsion bar on my Kershaw Leek recently broken... its sad 'cuz I was starting to love this little knife: very handy, realy sharp and quite smooth.

Anyone knows where can I brought a replacement bar.... and made it shipped to Mexico ?

Thanks in advance...

Contact Kershaw and either you'll send the knife in to get it fixed, or they'll just send you another (or a few, as previous stories have told). You might have to give them return postage to send it back to Mexico.

They send out new tensions bars to folks from what I've been told. I've read about more and more people breaking them here recently. I think primarily it is because they sit around opening and closing it all the time though and the bar gets hot or good and warm anyway until like all metal it eventually gets weak and snaps.

I have a Kershaw Scallion I really like because of the blade design and the way it fits in my hand but personally I don't like the assisted opening. I think I can actually get it out faster now that I have modified it than before.

I took the knife apart, removed the torsion bar, took off the pocket clip, ground off the flipper, and then removed the lock since I don't need it anymore. Then I drilled a small little hole in the blade so the little detent ball bearing (that is already in place on the walker lock but comes non functional) had a place to fall into and made it into a regular one handed opener that I can carry in my pocket without worry of it opening by gravity since the detent is working now.

I like it much better now. My wife had me remove the torsion bar from her Chive too but she uses the lock to keep the blade closed and carries it in her purse so I didn't have to grind off the wing.

One thing about the assisted opening knives. If the torsion bar breaks or is removed the blade is more likely to open by accident from gravity because the detent ball is non functional. At least that is how it is on the three I've bought. (Chive,Scallion, and BlackOut) The ones with the little flipper wings on them are particularly prone to opening by accident even with the torsion bar in use. That is what drove me nuts about my Scallion by having to fiddle with that lock all the time everytime I wanted to use it. I didn't trust carrying it without the lock on to keep the blade from accidentally opening. Now that I've done this mod to it I've made it my new EDC which it wasn't before.

I really thought about it before doing this and thought I may regret it but in truth I like it better now than before. Not that I'd recommend it. It just works for me personally. Someone had said that it wouldn't work as a regular one hand opener because the thumb studs weren't really for opening it but were the stops for the blade. In fact the Scallion opens easier than many of my knives from other companies. It is certainly lots easier to open than the Ka-Bar Dozier designed Thorn I had been carrying. I love that D2 blade though so time will tell if I go back to it or not. That and how well this Kershaw holds an edge being 420 HC steel.

That is definitly a warrenty, contact Kershaw and I'm pretty sure they hook you up with a new one.

At the store I work in, I've seen 3 kershaws with a broken bar, they've told me to replace it with a brand new one each time.

Kershaw is extremely nice with there warrenty policy.

Normal warrenties only cover manufactors defects, not wear and tear or abuse (as most people know), But Kershaw have told me to warrenty a few knives with broken tips, caused by abuse.

Pretty nice thing to do, especially since abuse voids the warrenty.

I was positively impressed by Kershaw's customer service. It happened the same thing to my Chive :( and they send me 5 (five) spare torsion bars and a pocket clip with screws (though I didn't ask for it, but they said just in case). All free of charge, and I live over the pond!
Just send them a mail and let them know about your problem and I'm sure they'll help you.
Too bad they don't have a section at this Forum. :(

Thanks Guys !

I'll contact Kershaw and see what they can do for me... thanks for the advice...

BTW... anyone has the address ?
