Was looking at a Kershaw Leek KS1660ST at my local Wal-mart today. It had a date of Oct 07 stamped on it, but I found no indication of what steel the blade was made from. Would Oct 07 be sandvik blade steel?

I have owned knives in ATS-34, VG10, and AUS-8A. ATS-34 was my favorite blade steel and AUS-8A my least favorite. AUS-8A would sharpen easily, but the edge retention was not near as good as the ATS-34. How does the sandvik that Kershaw uses compare to ATS-34 and AUS-8A? Thanks

I believe Leeks with a date of July '07 & later are Sandvik. As to Sandvik compared to the other steels: I'm no expert, but I believe the unscientific answer would be that it's better than AUS 8A, but not quite as good as ATS-34. By saying "better" or "not as good", I'm referring to edge holding ability. However, I'm sure someone "in the know" will pop up with a better explanation.

Wally World's not a bad place to buy Kershaws. Because of their high volume, they were probably one of the first stores to be carrying newer Kershaws with Sandvik. I didn't get a Leek from them, but I believe my tactical Blur is from one. Definitely better than the 440A that they were using.
