I just got a Kershaw Leek knife for my brother-in-law. I pulled it out of the box to test it. I was able to deploy the blade a few times using the tongue that sticks out of the back of the knife. After about 3 openeings, it got really stiff...to the point that I could hardly open it. So I tried usung the thumb stud.....bad idea. The blade partially opened, my thumb sliped and I cut myself pretty darn bad. Hey at least I know it is sharp!! Anyway, what is the deal with this thing? Should I send it back? Should I try loosening the tension screw? Does it need oil? More break-in? Any ideas whould be greatly appreciated!!

I would try loosening the screws (all of them), and then working to blade open and closed a few times. That might loosen it up. Sometimes the SpeedSafe torsion bar gets stuck and it kinda freezes the blade.

If you are good with knives, you could take the knife completely apart and let Kershaw send you a replacement Torsion Bar (for free). It is very easy to disassemble the leek. Always put masking tape over the blade edge and leave the blade half open before disassambling the knife.

Worse-case scenario: Send the Knife to Kershaw for a replacement. Good gift idea though! My family loves their Kershaws!

Before you go through all that, turn the knife over and look at the end, where there is a manual lock. If you've pushed it slightly over, it may be slowing the blade opening.

If it's really jammed, it might be best to get a replacement. These are fine knives from a company with great customer service. They will want to see what's causing it, and take care of you.

("the tongue that sticks out of the back of the knife" is called a flipper.)

I was at the knife counter in Wally world when some guy handling a Leek told his g/f "These are assisted opening, almost like a switchblade, watch this!" and then of course couldn't get it open because of the lock. He finally gave up trying as the g/f dragged him away. :D :jerkit:

My MOD CQDs are some of my all-time favorite knives. When I got my first, though, It never registered that they have a secondary lock at the thumb rest position. I accidentally engaged it and when I tried to close the blade, the plunge lock just sat there laughing at me. I couldn't figure it out! :)

Finally, I stopped, looked it over, began running my fingers over the handle, and felt the lock slip back ...

Live and learn!

By the way, what size torex driver does the Leek take? I have a T10 and a T6....the T10 is too big. Any info would greatly help. Thanks!

send it back

edit: PS. sounds like the pivot/washers or even the entire AO-mechanism got mangled. (= not good, send it back) :)

Actually the torx sizes are a T-6 and T-8. You may want to call the Warranty Dept. they may be able to walk you through the issue. 800-325-2891. Ask for the lovely Dawn ;) .
