How 'bout it? Anybody have any opinions on the new Kershaw Leek? I was looking at the rainbow version for a new EDC, 'cause come on, rainbows are sweet.

In general I just distrust speedsafes. I had one open in my back pocket before. Nice knives but just not for me.

I will say that the Leek is a very 'slick' looking design though and the speedsafe on that one seems to have a bit more of a 'kick' to it than the others...I like how slim the clip is...

I own about about twenty speedsafes (yes a bit excessive, 3 chives, 4 scallions, 4 whirlwinds, 6 avalanches, and 3 leeks). I use one of each and ive never had a problem with any. I never use the safetys on the chive, scallion, or leek and have never had one open accidently.
Ive been carrying the leek periodically for a couple months, ita a great knife to carry!! a pleasure!!!!
it doesnt print in the pocket, lies flat. Is a great cutter, and slicer, and has a nice pointed tip for precise cutting tasks. I would highly recommend getting at least one!!! ;)

I like the knife cuz the majority I've tried had an awsome opening kick to it, even more than the chive. The only thing is I'd only go for the original brushed finish.
If the finish of the rainbow leak is as polished like the boron coating of the black chive, I find that cleaning it is anoying.

the finish on the rainbow leak, from what I understand, even shows a fingerprint easily!!!

Yes--these new boron-type coatings seem to show fingerprints like crazy. Of course they wipe off and do no damage to the underlying metal, but it is rather annoying. It seems that the field of knife coatings is still an evolutionary process.

I have a Leek and am very impressed by it. It opens with a very solid kick, lots up tight, and cuts very very well. The safety is the only thing that bugs me, because it is very loose and far too easy to turn on my accident.

Cool little knife and a good value for the price. Mine has pretty much completely replaced my Spyderco Rookie for boxcutting duty.

The coating on the leek is ti-nitride...quite tough, and good for a using knife..fingerprints don't bother me while I'm using a knife, but if I'm not using it it MUST be perfect.

Regards,
Steve

I own and carry a Leek daily. I haven't had it open on me unless I wanted it too. I have tightened down the "safety" so that it is disabled. I don't see a need for it. If you fear the knife opening in a pocket just tighten the pivot a bit. I really like the Leek and I am very happy I bought one. My girlfriend carries a Chive and she likes that as well.

Leeks are indeed very kick ass looking, but my first impression of it as i was opening one was that it was gonna jump out of my hands. with speedsafes i tend to worry that i won't be able to get my big ol' thumb out of the way quick enough and end up seeing a piece of my flesh shot 23 feet in the air. the kick in the opening is very solid, and the profile is supersweet, but IMO i just worry too much about the speed safe, although the lock on the Leeks are better than the locks on the Chives.

I just got the new Rainbow Leek, partly because of the looks, and partly because I didn't already own a speedsafe. It's also one of the few that's actually lefty tolerable.

I'm quite impressed with the construction of the knife. It is solid, locks up great, and the speedsafe after a little tweaking is perfect for me. I don't feel the need for the safety, but it is there, and easy to operate.

One thing that disappoints me is the steel. It hasn't been an issue yet, as I haven't used the knife much, but I find it difficult to believe any knife company is actually using plain 420 steel. Buck's 420HC surprises me with it's edge holding and sharpening ability, maybe this will too.

So how durable is that coating? Will it get scuffed or scratched off?

Hmmm... Coated or uncoated???

the coating is fairly resistant, but if your going to use it alot I would go with the plain, thats what I did, just a personal opinion. The rainbow is really sweet though!!

Please help me out. Based on pics and comments on the KO Leek, I ordered one from KnifeWorks. However, what I received looks different from the online pics I saw. Furthermore, this difference is not at all appealing to me. Near the tip of the blade the edge is profiled to create a sort of recurved section. See the knife silouette below.

What I need to know is if this is actually the normal knife appearance/design, or is this a factory fluke? KnifeWorks is perfectly willing to replace or refund my purchase. But I don't want to have them send a replacement, if it is going to look the same as what I already received.

Your wise counsel will be hugely appreaciated.

Thanks,
TT2Toes
