I remember in an old booth review video (by the esteemed gent who isn't fancy), that Jen mentioned patents being filed for the new locks implemented in the Knockout, and/or Piston and Echelon.

I assumed these were proprietary designs, but see it now on other blades, namely Microtechs. I have a small amount of knowledge on prior infringements, and was curious if this is another instance of that. Are the lock designs patented and protected?

Marfione screwed Kershaw in many ways. There's no love for Microtech on this forum. It is because of them, we will never get "first look" pictures from Kershaw/ZT. Thomas himself said it.

There is a huge thread about it here too concerning the 0777. Its here somewhere, I'm just too lazy to find it.

And yes lock designs are patented especially if they're unique, but some companies get around that by making minor changes (SOG's arc-lock). I laughed my a$$ off when I saw that design, it was a complete ripoff of the axis lock.

As far as the "cut out" frame lock idea with the insert goes, I know Microtech's are spring loaded. There is a small one that pushes the bar out from the frame. Might just be one of the minor changes redfeenix mentioned.

They certainly seem the same to me though.

There's been plenty of chit chat about this already, but kershaw didn't come up with those designs either. A Russian knife maker made that lock design but there are so many minor differences in that kind of thing.

Let's be clear here, so as not to confuse anybody.

- The knockout and the ZT 0777 are our own, in-house designs. In addition, the adjustable lock face on the ZT 0777 is our own creation.

- When we introduced the Sub-Frame Lock concept with the Knockout, we were under the impression that it had not been done before. No one on our team had seen it before. After the ZT 0777 was released, the Russian maker contacted us about his version of the Sub Frame Lock.
