I have a couple Kershaw folder knives from the 70's and they have an X after the model number. Can anyone tell me why?

Thanks, this is my first post here but enjoy reading all the knife info.

The x's normally mean they are a blem or a second, and are not covered by warranty.

If it's a single "X" after the model #, current usage says that it was packaged in a plastic clam pack instead of a cardboard box. I'm not sure it had the same usage back in the 70s. A blem would be marked with 4 X's.

Yeah ... I don't think clam shell packaging existed 40yr ago.

Same with the "XXXX", as much as Kershaw markings change, it's hard to imagine that this mark remained consistent for 40yrs. ;)

I do know the "XXXX" marking has been consistent since no later than 1996, I have a couple examples from that year.

This might be a question best asked either to Kershaw directly or perhaps to a gentleman on here named Dave Anderson aka Kershawguy.

Thanks for the help Gent's..........I do believe they are seconds, I see a few minor flaws under close examination.

WRONG.
The XXXX to mark blems are put on AFTER the blade is initially lasered with the model #. This should be fairly easy to spot since they aren't going to be 100% consistent with each other, and the rest of the lasering.
They still use the single X today, to mark that, for instance, you have a 1670x. This means it could be a 1670, 1670NB, or any other thus variant of the 1670.
It's merely a placeholder for a more detailed description of the knife, if you will. Particularly since that 1670x blade can be used for any 1670 knife, not just a specific color handle, for example.
Feel free to email me a picture, and I can show it to Kershaw on my way to work tonight my username followed by the word INSTAGRAM [at] gmail
