Kershaw Nakamura set off alarm?

Alright, someone here is hopefully a genius when it comes to those things in stores that detect anti-theft devices that are stuck on merchandise. When I walked into a Rite Aid today I set off the alarm thing, and then again on my way out. I thought this was odd, so I started thinking. It then struck me I'm carring my new Kerhshaw Nakamura which has bolstered containing rings of copper, brass, and other metal. I know I've seen the backside of those anti-theft stickers and they contain rings of metal. Could the knife have set off the detector? I can't think of anything else that I have on me that's different and would set something like that off.

not unless the knife has an RFID tag in it
they receive a specific radio signal and send out another specific signal so i dont think its the knife

Could it be a cheap detector that is looking for something more simple? :)

I doubt it was the knife too. I tend to set them off in certain places, and I think it's my safe key for work. It works the same way old video games saved data, a small battery that saves my SSN and combination.

I once stuck an anti-theft strip in one of the cashier's purse. It took her weeks to finally figure out why she set off the alarm every time she went in and out of the store (I'm an a**hole).

happened to me once. what happened was i had one of those things stuck to tha bottom of my shoe! i must have picked it up out in tha parking lot or somthin.-fed

I guess to find out for sure I should ask someone to walk my knife through the sensor. :) From reading about the different types of scanning devices, it almost sounds like the knife could trigger something.

No your knife wouldn't set it off. I work in a drug store and walk thorugh those things many times a day with different knives in my pockets. I have never set it off unless I walked through with tagged mercchandise. They work based on an RF signal that the tags send out.

The technology isn't all that great, but it is fairly cheap. Basically if you have anything on you that is sending out a radio signal then if the conditions are right it will set the thing off. They also do just go off for no real reason sometimes depending on how it is setup. Just as an example excess metal around the detector could screw up how it is picking up signals.

you have rf tags and then the little circuit type that sends a signal via change in magnetic flux or something

I set one off once -- I had bought a belt pouch at another store and put it on my belt. I didn't notice that there was an anti-theft strip stuck to the back of it that the clerk didn't take off (I don't think that store even has a detector.) I entered the next store with no problem -- there was no detector at the entrance. Then I set off the alarm at the exit. A nice girl came and said it was probably because the clerk had forgotten to deactivate the tag on something I had bought. She looked through my bags of stuff -- it was a big store and I had bought a lot of stuff. She couldn't find anything. She told me to try again and I set it off again. She looked through my bags again.... Finally she told me to forget it and waved me through the door. I guess it was pretty obvious I wasn't a thief. She never did look in my pockets; I could have stolen something ... but a thief wouldn't have been laughing through the whole thing like I was.

You set it off when you entered the store, so look over the clothes you were wearing and everything you had with you when you entered the store. There's one of those little strips on something. It's going to keep embarrassing you until you find it....

BAHAHAHAHA! I tore through my wallet and found one inside! It has a #82 on it. This thing has probably been in my wallet since at least Christmas. I think I regularly set those things off, but think it's just something in my bag. I'm such a tool!
