I have been carrying a Kershaw Nakamura for sometime now, and I really like it. The blade is VG 10 clad with 420J2. VG10 is my favorite steel, and 420 is not that good. So, why use it at all? Does it help anything at all?

The reason for a laminated blade is that the outer steel is chosen for toughness and improved corrosion resistance, while the inner steel is chosen for edge retension. The goal is to produce a blade that will have excellent corrosion resistance and will take lots of chopping action without chipping while, at the same time, have excellent edge retension.

420J2 will have the toughness and corrosion resistance that one looks for in the outer layers of a laminated steel. I seem to remember several users of VG10 commenting that they have seen it discolor or get mild corrosion. The laminated version should not have this problem. VG10's edge retension is, as you have discovered, very good, but one would not normally want to make a chopper out of just VG10. The laminated version should be tougher.

Hope that helps,
Knarf
