Hi all!

I don't have any Kershaw knives as they are bit hard to get where I live. However I spotted a Kershaw Needs Work, black with polyamide handles ( not G-10 ) with black blade. Price is roughly $60 including shipping and VAT 22% so its pretty good deal in Finnish prices.

I know Kershaw is quite popular here but does someone own or has experience in Kershaw Needs Work? Is it work bying for light to medium work utility knife and for camping?

I like the straight razor design and handle design with general looks of it. Its also relatively compact knife.

I think Kershaw Needs Work would be great addition but I want to make sure before I put any money on it.

I have only used a Needs Work one time, and that was to sharpen it for its owner, It was pretty easy to sharpen, and took a nice edge.
The guy says he likes it. It was IIRC pretty comfortable in hand, and I like the blade shape. For opening boxes, cutting tape and other tasks imagine it would perform well. (That's what the owner and I use our knives for mostly at work). I would say that if you can get one for a good price, go for it...even though it is a pretty ugly knife IMO. :p I seriously doubt that will stop me from getting one n the future though. ;)

I have one, but I have not put it to much use as of yet. I will say it is a very good knife for the price it sells for and I will be getting a G-10 version.

I use mine hard every day I carry it, it holds up great, I love that wharncliff. And the acute blade angle puts the cutting force away from your wrist (hope i worded that right). The steel holds an edge well, better than AUS8 IMO, and takes a super razor edge and comes razor sharp from the factory.

Sounds sweet deal, Kershaw Lahar sells almost same price but seems bigger than Needs Work. Unique items in here. I hope I get Needs Work, Lahar will work too, if someone buys Needs Work before I can

Look harder, I have seen that knife cheaper than 60.00... 45.00 IIRC.

Edit: 25.00 actually.

Well, in Euro region and especially near the northern wolf border everything costs more thanks to VAT. And in here VAT is 22% atm, rises in 23% in few months. That sucks. I envy american's as they get their quality blades so much cheaper.

How is speed-safe in Kershaw knives? I heard it can break down and life expectancy is about 10,000 folds? Can knife be used if Speed-Safe breakes down?

p.s. I just want the bid, so I am now owner of Kershaw Needs Work ^^

The grass is always greener, isn't it? Yes, we can get Kershaws cheaper - but YOU can go to Jukka Hankala's shop and get one of his top-end customs a lot cheaper than I can!

Indeed. No matter what or where human beings are never satisfied ^^ You indeed are correct when saying grass is always greener..

The Speed Safe is awesome, and light hollow handles make a great lock up sound when you flip it open. As always Kershaw is there if a spring ever pops but I've been using mine daily for over a year, saltwater environment and all, and no Speed Safe problems here

Thanks scarysharp. That is really encouraging. I guess you oly really hear about knives when they don't work... I heard Kershaw had good warranty on their knives.

I really like my Needs Work. Some people think that it is ugly, but beauty is in the eye ...er, hand of the beholder. The Wharncliff blade is nice for trimming things with a straightedge (eg: trimming photos, mat boards, etc.) It takes a keen edge and holds it fairly well. I'm not sure I would have bought it for $60. But, for $30 it's a good value.

I just got one with the G-10 scales. Haven't used it for much more than opening boxes, but it is plenty sharp and the AO gives a nice snap when it locks open. The only place I've seen them online is at 2 Brothers Knife Co. Everyone else just has the older version.

You should like the Needs Work, there is quite a bit of blade for the handle size.

If you can get a Lahar for a similar price to the Needs Work, you should jump on it.

G10 handles and VG-10 Blade, with a build that you would pay over $100 for in another brand.

Here's a thread I posted a while ago with some pictures.

Pics and first impressions of the Lahar
