I recently got a Kershaw OD-1, and I love it. It's sleek, I love the blade shape, and the over drive system is my favorite flipper design now. Something about opening like an AO without using a spring impresses me. However, the flipper shakes a bit. I can move it up and down just a little in the closed position. Nothing major, but I"m wondering if that's how they all are. Are they all like that?

That's normal from what I've seen. I think they make them a little loose so the tolerances don't have to be perfect. When I make scales for this knife, I spend quite a bit of time fine-tuning to make it open smoothly without the rattle. You could do this yourself by putting a bit of epoxy in the recess and then milling it out to the proper thickness.

The flipper looseness is normal. It doesn't affect the operation of the knife. Mine is kinda loose too.

On a side note, my OD-1's blade detent is quite weak so I have to position the clip in tip-down carry. That really doesn't bother me as I don't have a strong preference either way but a knife does need a fairly strong blade detent for me to carry it tip-up. I think the weak detent is designed in because of the 2:1 flipper force require or something to that effect.

Still love it though. My OD-1 gets its share of EDC rotation duties.

On the scale side, remove the 2 screws nearest the blade pivot, leaving the last screw at the butt of the knife in, but loosened a bit. Pivot the scale out of the way. You can now access the flipper with the knife still intact. Take the flipper out and put a tiny blob of lithium grease in then reassemble. No more shaking noise.

I'll just let mine rattle, thank you very much. It doesn't affect the operation. One thing I don't need is a glob of pocket lint attractor in the works.

Yeah, I noticed that. I usually carry it so the spine is against a seam, and of course the one time I don't it opens up a bit while I jog up some stairs and I proceed to jab myself in the palm with the quite fine tip on the OD-1.

Ouch! :( Yeah, mine opened a bit and when I went to grab it, it "bit' me on my finger. Went fairly deep too with its slender point and sharpness out of the box.

The first round of them were like that. The current production (last few months) have been slightly changed
and the detent holds the blade in place much better.
Feels like a different knife. I believe it is even smoother opening now.

That makes sense - mine has MAR 09 om the blade, and I've never had a problem with it opening on its own.

Glad they fixed it. I'll have to pick up the new and improved version  . Frankly, I'd carry my OD-1 more than I do if it had a stronger detent. Thanks for the heads-up.

Mine's Jan 09 and it's so loose it can be snapped open with wrist action very easily without using the flipper.
