Stayed home sick from work today, boredom finally got to me...

I had been meaning to shoot pictures of the three Kershaw production versions of the Ken Onion Offset, however the G-10 version hasn't shipped yet (soon though). In the meantime I did a quick few shots of the two I have. The .40 and cartridges are there for scale (ok, ok, and dramatic effect).

The Offset is a fairly large folder. If you aren't familiar with it, it is unusual in that the blades are made by a metal injection molding process. The spatter pattern is unique to each of the aluminum handles. The G-10 version will have 3-D machined G-10 scales. The one with the dark blade (black) is from the first run (numbered). The gray bladed one is from the second run (not numbered).

Its not the fastest AO that I have, but when that blade starts and stops moving, you really know it. I've fired handguns with less kick ;) but don't get me wrong, its a good kick.

In any case, hope you enjoy the pictures. I'll likely add the G-10 Offset in later when I get it. Oh, and if you haven't guessed, I definitely like this knife.

Hi.

Nice pictures. I would like to ask something. What is the role of the spring (if this is really a spring) at the thumb stud? Does it assist the opening in some way, or it is some kind of a buffer (flip opening).

And again ... very nice pics. My new desktop wallpaper.:-)
Bye

The stud is actually the lock of the knife. The spring holds the stud in position so that it will engage the the flat section of the liner and scale. The fully open shots show where the stud locks. If there is no pressure trying to close the blade the spring holds the stud in position. If there is pressure trying to close the blade, the stud is pressed against the flat section on the liner and can't move anyway. All the knives I have with this system lock solidly with no play. Very fast to open and close. It is kind of addicting though, you tend to find yourself flipping them open and closed constantly.

Thanx. :-)

How do you like the handles? On the one I've got if you have any grease, wd-40, or whatever on your hands it is way to slippery to be safe.:(

Yeah to be honest, the aluminum scales are a bit slick, I think these were really meant to be eye-catching as a showcase for the metal injection molding technology used in the blades. This is why I'm really looking forward to the 3D machined G-10 scaled version coming up. The Spec Bump has similar G-10 scales and definitely is grippy.

Thanks, it definitely is. I tried to play it down, but it is a bit distracting to those who can appreciate it. :D

you just dont fully comprehend the size of the offset until you see it laying nxt to a pistol. especially if you have ever held a pistol. oh i so cant wait till june!

do you mind, i'm trying to resist buying one of these! ;) thanks for the great pics. macro lens? also THAT AMMUNITION IS LEGAL IN FLORIDA??

Thanks.
Revealing my nerdiness, but you realize, resistance is futile.

55mm Micro Nikkor, but honestly most P&S digitals with a macro setting could have handled the shooting distances I was using. The real trick is stopping down enough. Since I was sick I really just threw the whole set up down on the floor at the end of my bed. I shot it just bracing from the bed, so there were a lot of unusable shots. The two little flourescent lights I was using weren't really bright enough to be shooting without a tripod (or image stabilization).

I think I bought the ammo a few years ago at sports authority, as far as I know its legal.

Thanks for the pictures.. I have just decided the Offset will be my next production knife :)

You're welcome. Its a great knife, I'm still waiting for the G-10 version.
There is a thread posted in the Kershaw forum that shows the MIM Offset blade in various states of production.

If you haven't been by the Kershaw forum, there are also pictures posted of some of their newly announced knives, as well as a few prototypes.

The Offset has quite a bit of power behind it. thats because of the 2 torsion bars and the size of the blade. it wont be as fast as the smaller Kershaws, but it has to be the fastest AO knife its size. you will not be dissapointed by any means

Thank you. I want to get as much info as possible since I cannot handle the knife before I buy it. I liked the Storm II for example but when I finally got to handle it (during my trip to US) I was quite disappointed by the flipper.
