OK, I'm starting to get confused here. I'm looking at the Mini Task plain edge as my next production purchase. Checked it out tonight in person at a sporting goods store, and liked it, though I think the thumbstud could take some filing.

Anyway, <A HREF="http://store.yahoo.com/kershaw/k1500.html" TARGET="_blank">Kershaw</A> lists it as ATS-34. <A HREF="http://salesassociate.com/sc/products.asp?ID=192&Category=266" TARGET="_blank">Knife Outlet</A> says 440V. <A HREF="HTTP://store.knifecenter.com/pgi-ProductSpec?KS1500" TARGET="_blank">knifecenter</A> says 440C. <A HREF="http://onestopknifeshop.com/store/kershaw-mini-task.html" TARGET="_blank">1sks</A> also says 440C. But then <A HREF="http://skylandscutlery.com/products/kershaw/ker1500.htm" TARGET="_blank">skylandscutlery</A> says ATS-34 again.

Can somebody clue me in, please?

Mine is ATS-34. I have heard here on the forums that new Kershaw 1500's are marked 440C. I have never heard that the mini-task was made with 440V steel like it's big brothers the Random Task and Ricochet. I'm guessing it will be 440C if you order now.

I have the latest mini-task model which I got about 3 weeks ago, and it is 440-C.

Ken Onion had something to do with the change. He told me here on the forums that he made the change cause he like the properties of 440-C, plus was an economical change.Had something to do with availability of ATS-34.

I had the same problem with websites when I bought the knife from a knife dealer, and it was marked 440-C, and I thought it was an error, but after posting the same question, Ken Onion answered me and explained the above. He also said if you want one, better get it now cause Kershaw is discontinueing that model as well as the larger Random Task, and 1 or 2 other models in the speed safe design.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, all. I get the general idea now, that earlier models were ATS-34 but it's now 440C. BUT, I had sent an email to Knife Outlet, asking about their statement that the Mini Task was in 440V, and whether it was a typo. Their response, received today: "No. 440V not 440C."

Guess I need to send a mail to kershaw next.

If it really is 440V at KnifeOutlet, snap it up. I think someone is standing by the printed word, however, and would do well to go an open a box and look carefully at the mark on the blade.

Kershaw should be able to confirm whether or not they ever produced that blade in 440V stock. A lot of us wish they would, but I had never heard that they had actually done it.

BTW, 440C is a fine blade steel also. Any one of these steels will do just fine, IMO.

Let us know what you find out.

Well, still haven't heard back from kershaw. Went and bought the 440C version from knifecenter anyway. I actually bought two, one as a gift, and one for myself because I couldn't resist

Interestingly, one of them has a weaker opening and a better lockup, while the other one snaps open faster but doesn't lock up quite as tight. Both are acceptable, however. Both are not as sharp as they could be, just barely shaving, but that will be fixed shortly. I guess my buddy gets the one that doesn't jump quite as fast, but locks up tighter, as he's not quite experienced in handling knives just yet...

All in all a cool knife. I can't stop playing with it

Both in A. G. Russell's catalog and there web site it says that it is CPM-440V.

http://www.agrussell.com/kershaw/ke-1500.html

I think it is or was at some time that, I personally had not heard of it beginning 440C until now. (I also just recently got a job in a knife store, I'm so happy its so much fun

sorry had to share that, and off the top of my head I think ours is ATS-34, but I could be wrong) Also they have had 2 different versions of the thumb stuff, and a version with the logo etched and the other painted (my way of describing, not sure if correct) Humm, maybe there are a few different versions, I don't know just trying to help.

Thanks for the update mmt. I noticed A.G. Russell's price was $40 more than I paid for my 440C version, so I went back and checked Knife Outlet. And wouldn't you know it, it's on sale for $15 less than I paid at knifecenter. Oddly enough, Knife Outlet's product info page for the Mini Task says ATS-34, and when you click for pricing info, it says 440V.

Oh well, I'm sure I'll be happy w/ 440C
