Kershaw Outcast; worth it?

There are a couple on the Bay, and I've been interested in it. The large camp/survival knife I own is the Buck Hoodlum, and it's currently on a swap loan to a friend, and I have his ESEE Junglas. The blade sizes are all in the 10" range, and I've seen both good and bad things about the Outcast. The D2 steel is alluring, I've never had a large D2 knife, and again I've read both good things and bad things about that as a large outdoor knife steel.

Is it worth getting? Is it robust? Or would I be better off with what I've got? Uses would be chopping, some batonning, and other assorted tasks that one would otherwise use something like a small hatchet or Woodman's Pal for.

Thanks gents.

Of course. I love the Junglas, but why not have more knives? Besides, this one isn't mine and I could get a Junglas again later if I wanted to.

The Outcast is nice, no hot spots on the hand when chopping. The first thing I would do is convex the edge. When mine needed sharpening I did this and it makes all the difference in the world.

I have one that I picked up from Dave at a good price. You might want to contact him and see if you has any laying around, I'm pretty sure he can what you'll find on ebay.

I can't complain about mine, and since I stripped the finish off of it and re-profiled the edge it's a mean cutter. The only issue was a slight chip when I hit a rock cutting out some roots.

After checking out the prices on eBay, I'd say you really need to see if Dave can help you out any.

Dang it, you guys may have just convinced me that I want one...

Hmmm, sent Dave an email. Hope he has one. I've been waiting for the Camp series, since the Camp 10 looks like the Outcast, but I don't know when that'll happen. I'm not a fan of the hatchet or axe, so the combination of large fixed blade and folding saw seems to work for me. Hopefully I'll have some luck.

The Outcast is a really tough knife. I for one can vouch that the rumors D2 doesn't make a good chopper steel is utter BS. The shoulders on the edge are thick out of box, if you can do something to knock them back it will chop/cut better. I have wailed on that knife for a few years now and it hasn't chipped or failed in any way whatsoever. There is a YT vid of a guy who's handle split at the very end past the tang. If this happens there is still enough handle to have a comfortable grip. It's a full 3/16" thick with a minimal taper to the point, I have no concerns regarding its durability. I just wish it was easier to touch up, if you do manage to ding the edge get out your diamond stones hehe!

I have a Junglas, a D2 Rat-7 and had an Outcast. I didn't care for the Outcast's grip but under no circumstances is D2 not enough, in my opinion. I don't dig holes with my knives so I can't be an expert though.

If you want to replace your hatchet, the SYKCO 1311 (lots more cash, though) is my choice. I use that instead of a 14 inch machete, hatchet or the Junglas. I just pair it with any other smaller knife when I am in the bush.

So, do you guys say that the Outcast is a piece worth trying to get, or should I go with a Junglas?
