I am just fixated on this knife for some reason.
I know that I should get a Phat Bob ..lol but I really really like the way the Packrat is shaped.
Anyone have any real world experience with it, or something similar but better ?
Help me out because I am seriously close to pulling the trigger on a pair of these.

I think you need both. (am I really the first person to say that?)
The Phat Bob is the only Dozier knife in the kabar line that I would buy. At 3" w/ polished micarta I bet its got a great feel. Never seen one in person.

If you like the Packrat, look at the Junkyard Dog. Hoo boy. I LOVE that knife, and have both sizes. It's large - too large to legally carry in my state, unfortunately. The action is amazing, the handle screams to be fondled, the blade shape is stunning, the edge fantastic.... yeah. The smaller version isn't as compelling because the hand-perfect handle doesn't work as well at the smaller scale, unless you've got micro hands like Arkanian. ;-)

I've got an orange and a black one. Just like all my Kershaw blades they are great knives. I find myself liking other knives better though. It fits into the hand pretty well but it is a little small for me. If I had to compare it to say a Ka-Bar Dozier folder I like the Dozier better for the blade shape. I know people have preferences/likes/dislikes when it comes to that but for me its just not comfortable for my edc tasks. The Dozier on the other hand is a champ of a knife.

Kershaw makes great knives. I can't deny that, and I always say, if you really want a knife, and it's good quality, which Kershaw always is, go for the one you want. Ultimately, it's YOUR preferences that will be the determining factor in how much you love the knife. Personally, my Kershaw/ZT knives never seem to stay in my EDC rotation. Not because they're not nice, but because I didn't love the way they look.

I do not like the way the Phat Bob looks. I still don't, even after modding it and such. I think it's mainly the blade shape, which is too wide at the tip for my tastes, but I'm reluctant to mess with the edge. But it's a great knife, and I can't say I regret buying it, especially at the price point. So if you are asking if you should buy both, I'd say absolutely yes. Get the knife you want, and a solid knife that comes very well recommended. That way, if you don't like the Kershaw for some reason, you have a Phat Bob that you know you can rely on for cutting ability at least.

I do like the JYD, Daizee, I was actually looking at that with the new composite blade YUM, but I have never been a huge fan of that style of handle.
That's why I haven't bought the Ka-Bar Potbelly.
Like Crimson the blade shape on the Phat Bob is the only thing keeping me from already owning one.
I LOVE the roach belly shape/style blade.
If I thought I could trust myself to do it I would get the Phat Bob and change the blade shape ..lol but I am nowhere near good enough to try that.
Thanks for all the input so far guys I am liking it.

Ok sooo Whats the diff between Aus 8 Stainless and Sandvik 14C28N stainless steel ?
I know somebody knows ..lol Fill me in.

So I pulled the trigger on the Phat Bob in Aus 8 for my pocket knife and also a Kershaw Select fire, (the knife with a screwdriver built in) for my work knife. Work as in what I do for a living , not work as in camp or woods work ..lol.
Thanks or the help guys.
Between your info and my desire to be brand loyal , heh it wasn't a tough choice.

I don't have any experience with the Pack Rat specifically, but the 14C28N steel is good stuff. I like it better than AUS 8, but not by a huge margin, and it depends a lot on heat treat, etc. I do like my Kershaws, but the Phat Bob looks very intriguing, especially because of the blade shape (call me weirdo), although I'll likely make it a bit pointier if I get ahold of one. I've come to the conclusion that knives in that size range are about ideal for me as work knives, my Native III gets more use than any other knife I own. I hope there's enough of those D2 versions floating around that there'll be one available when I can afford one.

Got my Phat Bob today, feels great in the hand.
Out of the box sharp, the action is a little tight but thats good because when it breaks in it should be perfect instead of coming perfect and breaking in loose.
The micarta feels nice, I might soften the edges of the slabs a little but all in all, very happy.
Its a chunky solid feeling knife and it locks up tight Glad I got it.

Man, it was entirely the PB blade shape that got me obsessing and eventually buying two. Weird how people have different opinions :)

Love the phat bob its a pretty nice knife, Also i like the pac rat but like already said it is a little small but would be a great knife if it was a little bigger
