Kershaw question

Also, the JYD has stainless scales, and is a frame-lock. The JYD II has G-10 scales, and is a liner-lock.

JYD1: stainless frame lock... smaller size. light - med EDC use
JYD2: G10w/ stainless linerlock... Larger size. Heavy utility EDC use.
Both are excellent EDC knives... just depends on how big your jobs are.,

Which would you prefer? I am leaning toward the JYD ll.
I have both, and I like the larger JYD II the best...It flips open VERY fast, and the G-10 handle has a very nice, very secure feel to it.

Jim, Kershaw does a good linerlock knife and they are using some very thick liners on the JYDII, .070" to .080" or somewhere inbetween. Only thing holding me back from one, besides the money:(, is that durn clip! I know it was designed to complment the knife and just saw some pics. of the custom JYD over on the Kershaw forum that looks FANTASTIC! I'm just into the low-key clips that place most if not all of the knife out of sight.

I suppose the clip is a downside, as it's pretty big. Other than that, I'd definitely get the JYD II. While it's a bit larger than the JYD I, that larger blade is much easier to flip open than the JYD I. I found that I just could not consistently flip open the JYD I (W/O a great deal of wrist action), so it had little worth for me.

Good luck with your choice.

you can flip the JYD1 with no wrist... you just need practice flipping. Many people don't want to invest the time

I don't understand the problems people are having flipping open the JYD I - very easy.
I even took the torsion bar out of the Needs Work and I can flip that.

Given a choice I'll take a frame lock over a liner lock everytime if the knife is of a design suitable for my needs. The Needs Work is very easy for me to open, and I like it alot. I don't have a JYD, but I would suggest the frame lock if the other design features suit you the user. Flipping is usually just a breaking in function and a little practice to quickly override the detent ball. If you want practice, get a Kershaw External Toggle Lock, you'll get all the wrist training you need. Smiles! Seriously, I flip an M-21 Carson very quickly and it's a huge knife.

I narrowed-down the clips on both of my JYD's...No problem.

Glockman, how many knives do you own?
As far as Kershaws go, I own 9 Kershaw knives (8 folders, 1 fixed blade), and 2 Zero Tolerance ZT 0200 folders. Not counting my kitchen knives, and a few "junkers", I own about 25 "good" knives right now.

Sorta OT, but what did you use to slim down the clips Glockman? A Dremel?
Sort of...It's the Sears Craftsman version of the Dremel. I also used a file to keep the straight-edge straight, and some wet/dry sandpaper to polish the edge with. If you go back a couple months here at the Kershaw forum, you'll find more info, including photos of the same mod as I did.

For anyone who can't get there JYD I to open every time and fast:

Try this flipping technique. I can get it open as fast as any AO
out there.
