Ok I saw some picture of the upcoming Kershaw R.A.M. (in the Kershaw at Outdoor Retailers' Expo! thread) and I'm very intrigued by it! I really love the design (I'm a huge fan of flippers)!

Anyways I can't find any info on it, and I'm curious about the specs of the knife. I figured this would be the best place to ask the questions since their our some many people here who are very knowledgeable with Kershaw knives. Also the Kershaw employees and people in the know who post here.

What kind of steel? Weight? Size? etc...

Thanks so much!

All I know about it is that it will come with Sandvik 13C26 steel. Thomas are some of the others will know more about it then me.

Here you go. Delivery will be later this fall.

Awesome! I can't freakin wait! That's probably the perfect EDC for me! Please keep me informed on this knife as I want to order one as soon as it's available!

Thank Thomas!

Well they are a bit smaller in size, so we figured "studs" may be a little misleading. ;)

I was ALLL kinds of excited about this knife... and then I handled it at Outdoor Retailers. :p

Now... I'm as impatient as my 9 year old for this thing to come out.

The Hawk Lock is AMAZING. Nobody could explain to me how it works, but functionally it is just the coolest thing ever. The flip is easily done with an index finger - much easier to me than using the thumb thingies. It opens very smoothly and locks up firmly with no play. And... it's not assisted opening! When the lock button is pulled back, the blade swings freely, and in fact can be closed by holding vertically, pulling the button back, and tipping the knife slightly so the blade swings around by gravity.

This is a GREAT knife at an amazing price.

Man, you are really NOT helping me here...... I'm already dying for one also and here you go making it worse!:D

Thanks for your impressions though, glad to hear my excitement is for a worthy item! Though I never doubted for a minute Tom ;)

Thanks! My anticipation is through the freakin roof!!!!! I want to pre-order one! Can I?

Thanks Thomas. Very nice. At least, it looks better than the original. :) IIRC, the pair of tiny thumbstuds (well, there's three of them now) was called "thumbtrap"?

I think it's a variation of Hawk's TOAD concept.
There is even a diagram showing how it works here! :)

If I'm understanding the diagram correctly... no.

Looking at the TOAD design, it appears that the "long toggle" is attached to the blade via a pivot, and that the toggle pulls or pushes the blade when activated.

The Hawk Lock in the R.A.M. does not use this mechanism. When I played with it I pulled the "button" back as if to close the knife, but only moved the blade half-way so it was perpindicular to the handle. I turned it so the blade was verticle to the ground, and moved it back and forth - it swung freely.

What's more, the mechanism seemed to me to be contained in the scale(s). I could look between the scales of the R.A.M. and see only the screws attaching them together. Otherwise, it's an "open" design, which should make it GREAT for use in unpleasant environments. It looked like it could just be blown/hosed out and you're good to go.

Another thing I haven't talked about yet is the little ratchet wheel on the clip. I'm not sure how I feel about it personally, but it's definitely "gadgety". The wheel has grooves on it, and a wire that interacts with the grooves at a perpindicular angle to them. (I'll have to find better pictures) Anyways... as implied by the term "ratchet," the wheel only turns in one direction - toward the inside. What this does is: when you're clipping it onto your pocket the ratchet "rolls" down the fabric... but won't roll back. There's a little rubber or something on the edges of the wheel, so it resists sliding and basically locks the clip onto your pocket. To remove the knife from your pocket, you have to lift up the clip slightly so the pressure is off the rubber and it can slide. It's cool that it "locks" into your pocket... I just didn't get a chance to see how hard it is to take it back out.

Still looking for pics...

but I found this YouTube:

It's consistent with what I did with the one I saw. :D

It might be hard to tell at the end, but what he does is pulls the button down, and then swings it left and the blade swings around. Basically, you can flick it open, but only if you pull the button down.

Aha. Thanks for the explanations (and links). As I said, I was thinking it's a variation of the TOAD. Now I see it's a different kind :o
