I recently got a Kershaw Ripcord & after playing with it & modding the belt clip, I've been carrying it every day.

First off, the one I got is the newer version with the belt sheath, not the dangling belt sheath. I noticed the blade coating appears to look like the boron coating I've seen on some other Kershaws (The boron Chive & Centofante come to mind), even though the specs say the blade's DLC coated. The handle appears to be DLC coated & has their trac-tec insert (Like a Blur's handle).

Before getting into what I modded & thought of it, I didn't care for the super thin blade tip (Looks like I already slightly bent it & I don't know how). I also didn't care for the belt clip, even though it seemed like you could set it up for sideways carry, I couldn't figure how to.

The knife has a 3 1/4" PE blade that appears to be great for stabbing & not too bad for slashing/cutting. The handle's 4 3/8" long, making for a fairly compact, but decent size knife. I like how quickly the knife came out & the lock system appears to be fairly strong. This is the quickest into action "folder" that I've come across (If you can call it a folder). It's a manual OTF, but it's as quick or quicker than a Spyderco P'Kal.

The handle's comfortable & although it doesn't have much of a guard for your fingers, the jimping on the handle seemed to be sufficient.

Personally, I really didn't care for the belt clip, so I took it off & attached a small Tek-Lok onto the sheath. I set it up for sideways carry (Enabling me to draw it out to the right). This allowed me to draw it with my right hand into a regular grip & I could draw it with my left hand into a "ice pick" style. By reversing the sheath, I could draw it with my right hand into a P'Kal style draw & a regular draw with my left hand. With the small Tek-Lok, this made for a very compact & concealable knife (Especially with an untucked shirt).

I've liked it so much, I've carried it daily since I got it. The neat thing about it, is that if you decide on not carrying another knife (I typically carry 2-3 on me at any time, sometimes more), it leaves you pockets empty & open, because you don't have anything clipped on them. However, I think the knife's usefulness is more towards SD, than for EDU. Of course, this is just my opinion, as it can be used as an EDC/EDU.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of how it's drawn from its sheath, I would think it's not sheeple friendly.

I have one too, a very cool knife. I found it to be very handy. The mirror like surface on mine surprised me, I expected the black coating to be duller. I've carried it blade up on my SO Tech Go-Bag and it rode and was drawn fairly well. It is scary sharp too!

Can the blade on the Ripcord be deployed manually? Or is the sheath required for deployment?

Yes and no:o Can it be deployed manually, yes if you take a flat piece of metal and slide it up the groove. It can be "sheathed" by pressing in the internal liner lock and carefully sliding the blade back down.

I got a plain polished one for Christmas last year. I like it a lot. Actually, I'm packing it today. Unless you are planning on jumping rope, the blade will stay in the sheath just fine when it is inverted. I prefer carrying this way since it is easier to deploy and resheath.

Yeah, it takes a "bit of work" to open/close it manually. The sheath is pretty much integral with the knife, but it really is a great knife for certain uses, IMHO. I'm told the standard belt-clip can be set-up for horizontal carry with the sheath, but I like the compactness of the small Tek-Lok, as it doesn't show outside of the sheath. If you're wearing a black belt & one doesn't look too closely, you really can't tell if it's a some type of cell phone or something, & if you wear it with your shirt un-tucked (Which I do alot because I CC a gun, too), no one pretty much sees it.
