On our local eBay a Shallot came up for sale, at a decent price, so the knife nut in me got interested. It was made in October 2008, with a CPM 110V blade (I can see "1840110" etched on the blade), but I understand that the current model is in Sandvik 13C26.

So, if price is not an issue, should I get this one in 110V or should I get the current one instead ?

You should grab it. They made a limited number and it is unlikely anymore will be produced.

s110v is about 100x better than the regular steel. The regular steel is good, but the s110v is fantastic.

at christmas time, I used my s110v to cut thru those tie wraps that hold kids toys to the cardboard box. Still shaving sharp with s110v.

the next day I tried the same thing with my zing, rolled the entire edge.

the steel on the zing holds up great for cutting soft materials, but I am used to my zdp and s110v knives taking more abuse.

Really? Cool!
Unfortunately it's not a BIN but an auction, so I'll have to wait 5 days. But I'll definitively keep tabs on this one ;).

There are still some of the CE versions kicking around but the PE ones are rare and have become somewhat pricey.

Yes absolutely. I got one, and its performance is nothing short of astounding. Although, I did upgrade mine, and if you want to get the max out of your 110V I suggeest you spend time and some money to do that.

Stock Kershaw 110Vs are in the 58-60HRC. Official specs varied, from 60-62, to 59-61, but of all the actual RC testings of CPM S110V shallots the highest result was 59HRC. The rest were all 58HRC.
I've sent mine to Phil Wilson for rehardening, then for regrinding to Tom Krein, and in between to Richard J to clean the blade up after rehardening. Details about all that here - rehardening blades.
Now it is 64HRC and gaining 6HRC points is day and night. More detailed review/descriptions in Kershaw CPM S110V shallot review.

110V, Id love to have something in that.. If you like the characteristics of the Shallot, I think its a good deal.

I am ready for kershaw to put out more knives in this steel, eg;

RAM
LEEK
Blur

you get the idea!

The 110's turned out great. I made sure I didn't miss out from the get-go.

Any pics?

Thanks

Unfortunately, being in Brazil it would be totally unreasonable for me to send it back and forth abroad, even if the end result is so astounding. Like I said, it's up for auction, so I'll have to sit tight and see if I can snipe it for a good price. From what you guys are saying I think I can go a bit higher then I would normally go, due to the rarity and the good performance. Besides, this one is HERE, no shipping hassles, no Customs hassles, and peace of mind usually doesn't come for free, but it's always a good investment.

Sonny, would you by any chance have a pic of one of your blades in your hand? I would like to have an idea of overall size.

Oh, and one more thing. Coincidentally, there's also a Damascus Leek up for grabs, as a BIN (I never find stuff locally, but when it rains, it pours...). This one is just a current version, though looks pretty cool in Damascus.
How do both compare? Size-wise, is the difference huge?

I'm thinking that if I can't get the Shallot I may go for the Leek as consolation prize.

I suspect the price on that knife will start to skyrocket near the end

Then I hope that people that could be interested in it do not read this thread :D.

I have one in PE. I perused CPM's brochure on S110V, and on top of being a high performer in terms of edge retention, it also shows as an extremely rust resistant steel. The handle on your Shallot will rust before the blade does. If the price is reasonable, it's definitely something you want to get.

I liked the 110V version well enough as a knife that I bought a ZDP-189 twin.

Got one from STR last year. I'm extremely happy with it. Cuts very well and, as others have reported, the edge just stays sharp.

It's a PE and I'm keeping it.:D
