The other day I went to flick my Shallot open but it opened halfway. My first thought was that the torsion bar broke, but when I close the blade there's still some resistance; it still tries to fling open (barely). Any ideas on what's wrong? Does opening it void the warranty? Thanks.

Might need cleaning out or lubricating and working the mechanism.
Opening it up is OK, they send out torsion bars, you have to open it up to replace them.

Maybe some rust or something sticky on the blade causing the slow opening?..Not sure...In any event I would open it up and take a look. Not sure on the warranty but it would be nearly impossible to tell if you have opened it or not. Even if they did know you opened it, if the torsion bar broke I don't think they would kill your warranty over it.

As Esav said, opening up a Kershaw or ZT has not or will not void your warranty period. Sounds like it needs the pivot cleaned. Or if you had been messing with the pivot screw the tension is too tight and needs backed off a hair. Kershaw is very good at working with the customer if you need to lean on them. need a new t-bar call them up, need a new clip call them up, need it sharpened send it in.

Probably needs to be cleaned. I've taken down a heavily-abused Shallot before and once all the gunk, rust, and debris was cleaned out it flipped like new.

When I tried to unscrew the pivot screw, it just kept turning and turning. The circle thing on the opposite side of the screw on the other scale just keeps turning when I turn the pivot screw.

If you stop the other side from spinning you'll be able to disassemble it just fine. Put pressure on it.

If you are having trouble, or you don't have the expertise or tools just yet, send it back to Kershaw before you mangle it. They will fix it without feeling obligated to give you a new knife, and their prices won't raise for all involved.

They have a fantastic reputation for customer service.
