Hi all,

my name is Jonathan, i m from Spain, and my english is very very bad, sorry.

The doubt that I have is on the steel SG2 of this knive, that for what .. it is a steel powder Japanese, relatively modern , of a great hardness (64 rockwell) and an excellent retention of edge. Apart it takes two caps of stainless steel SUS410, which award mas hardness, flexibility and resistance to the corrosion.
Well, the razor at that I have looked in some sites, the steel comment that it is a VG10, in others a SG2. And I am almost 100 % sure that two versions do not exist, in fact in the same web of the brand it puts the following thing.

Since my Englishman is of laugh, I have not just found out. Probably it is a VG10 improved or mas modern, not. That you think?.

But nonetheless I do not have clearly if the knive at that I have looked, has two versions (SG2 + SUS410 or VG10) or it is that I do not find out. Since in a side it puts a thing and in other one, other one.

The this knive made by the brand of Japanese knives Shun and distributed by Kershaw?. Or is it Kershaw's sub-brand?. That mess!.

Regards

Good question. Even Kershaw's own site says SG2 between 410, and then underneath "features" says, "VG10 super steel."

Yes, in Kershaw's web to say it. I not to understand anything.
I to ask Kershaw directly, but not to answer.

From my limited understanding, sg2 is the powder equivalent of vg10. So, it would be like CPM-VG10 if Crucible was making it. Does that make any sense?

Not the case. The composition was posted here one time and it's different from VG10. IIRC, it differed from the super gold that Falkniven lists so there are two super gold powders from the same company, but they're not the same as any of the VG series, also from that company. Am I confusing you now?

Ok then, there's a super gold 1 , and a super gold 2. Kershaw uses SG2. Falkniven uses Super gold 1 in their "SG3", and laminate it with VG2, thereby calling it "SG3". I'm not sure what Kershaw laminates it with. I think it's sus410 like Shun, but am not sure.

Falkniven analysis for 3g : SGPS (edge)
C - 1.40
Si - 0.50
Mn - 0.40
P - 0.030

Cr - 15.00
Mo - 2.80
S - 0.030
V - 2.00
"The new edge steel, 3G, is a revolutionary laminated anticorrosive steel, with a core comprising the well-proven powder steel Super Gold Powder Steel (SGPS) and sides of VG2." From Falkniven

Kershaw's SG2 , From Tim G.
SG2 is:

C: 1.20-1.30
Cr: 14.0-15.0
Mo: 2.8-3.5
V: 1.8-2.0

Takefu ( the company that makes SG and VG series) page on their knife steels http://www.e-tokko.com/eng_original_list.htm

By the way, In STR's review of this knife he described it as having VG10 steel laminated with sus410. Perhaps the dsign steel has been changed recently. Joe

So, the question remains; is the current Shun mentioned in the first post SG2, or is it VG10? Again, the Kershaw web page is ambiguous and lists BOTH steels in the description.

3-1/2" blade is VG-10 at 60-62 Rc

I think the Shun guys got carried away on descriptions and listed
it as SG2 like their Elite line.
You can kinda tell by the price.
The cheapest Shun Elite is a 3-1/2" paring knife at $155 MSRP.
The Higo is only $125 and a folder on top of that.

Hope that helps

Thank you very much to all for the information.

After a week of wait, KAI (Kershaw) answer to my question on the steel, this is what I answer myself:

"Dear Mr. Lorenzo,

Thank you for your inquiries. The Higo Nokami is a knife made with VG-10 steel. The SG-2 is used on our Elite line and is considered a suprerior steel to VG-10. It is a powderized steel, so it is strong and can hold a very sharp edge.

Pakkawood is wood which has been coated with a resin, kind of similar to Micarta, but not the same. It’s beautiful, like wood, but moisture-resistant, like plastic.

I hope this information helps. If you have further questions, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Very truly yours,
