Kershaw Skyline or BM Vex...

So, I'm planning on getting a new EDC knife, and I'm torn between the Vex and the Skyline. They're both pretty similar in appearance, so I think build quality will determine which one I'll end up getting. So BF... Any comments on which one I should get?

Thanks.

I have the Vex, in tanto point (because I prefer thumb studs). I've seen plenty of pictures of the Skyline. I would say get the Skyline, because:
1. It has better steel than the Vex and is made in the USA, so it should cut better longer.
2. It looks to be slimmer than the Vex, which is a plus. The Vex is very bulky.
3. The Vex should run about ten dollars more than the Skyline.

Also, look at the Spyderco Tenacious, if you really dig Spyderco designs

The Vex is an excellent knife. The bulk makes for a great grip yet isn't too much in the pocket. For the price, it's an excellent knife with a great design.

Yes, you can get knives in better steel for a little less money and some different design elements.

The design elements I really like in the Vex are a good natural grip. The clip works comfortably into the grip as well, something quite rare. A comfortable and non-bulky self-guard that indexes the hand well without loooking or fumbling. And the blade is in-line with the handle. Spydercos put too much included angle between the blade and the handle. And I'm not a fan of flippers. They interfere too much with some types of cutting, food prep for example. The Vex's crowned spine is classy.

The skyline is also made in the USA.
It's a great little knife and EXTREMELY worth the small pricetag.

I vote skyline.

I'm actually not a big Spyder hump fan... So no Tenacious for me. Not doubting Spyderco quality of course. I own a Native, and love it.

So one more for the Skyline.

Any more suggestions?

There's probably a Buck tacticool in that price range.

Eknifeworks has the Mayo Cutback for $10. Those are good knives.

I'm not really looking for anything tacticool (but tacticool is always a plus!). Really looking for more of an EDC knife.

Tacticool is just my term for a one-hand opening knife with a clip.
One other, if you like carbon steel, is the Moore Maker Roper's kniife, made in the USA (by Bear I believe). It's got yellow Delrin handles, 1095 blade, thumb hole, and lockback.
The Spyderco Delica is a good knife, and about $50. Also take a look at the Benchmade Pika and Ambush.

Oh, and I almost forgot the Byrd line by Spyderco. Meadowlawrk- pretty much a Delica with a weird hole and Chinese alphabet steel (8rcvwhatever)

I have a skyline and tenacious. I've only handled the tanto vex. With that said I do like the handle feel and large thumbstuds of the vex. For EDC though, especially since its summer, I very much enjoy the lightness of the skyline over the tenacious or vex. I think sharpening the skyline would be simpler too. Some might argue that the skyline blade shape would be better for all around cutting chores, but I think thats more of a mental comfort. I think it will come down to what you prefer , thumbstud or flipper and 4.7 oz vs 2.3 oz.

Here are a couple of quick side by side pics for ya.

I obviously have both, but if you're just going to get one for now, I'd go with the Skyline. the flipper is awesome, the G-10 texture is just right(a little grippier than the Vex), and you can't go wrong with the Swedish Sandvik steel. Very good performance for the price. Made in the USA doesn't hurt either;)

Cheers,
jon

Glad I stuck to XP. My son has Vista on his laptop.....hate it!!

+ 1 more on the (little knife that could) Skyline.

And J-Mac is right, that Sandvik is some good stuff.

I'm now thinking that I should have dropped the extra $120 to have them install XP on it!:grumpy:

Still a pretty sweet laptop for the price.

And to stay on target for this thread, nice hair whittling job with that Sandvik SV:thumbup:;)

Go with the Skyline!!!
