Kershaw Spec Bump G10 Handle Changeover Question

I was wondering when the changeover took place from the version with the small ridges to the current version with the webbed appearance. Also, are there any other differences between the two (i.e. blade material, liner material, coating, etc.). I accidentally put my Mini Cyclone TiZDP through the washing machine and dryer so I'm looking for nice new shiny toy to play with:mad: It still works fine, but now its all scratched to hell and some of the black coating chipped off.

crap dude. that has got to stink. running your knife through the washer. and the tizdp one at that. wow. wish i could answer your question though, but i do send my condoloences for the cyclone (working or not. still enough to make you shudder).

CBracer1, are there actual places where there are flakes of coating missing on the Cyclone?
Or are do they look like scratches or metal streaks?
In an earlier thread Tim Galyean pointed out that the coating on the TiZDP Cyclones is harder than many metals, and that "scratches" in the coating are more likely other metals deposited on the coating.

Not that I want to discourage you from getting a Spec Bump, you should definitely get one, it's a great knife.

BTW, to answer the original question, I believe at least the first production run of 500 had the grooved handles and CPM-154 blades. After the first run, I don't know if any more were made with that combo. I'm pretty sure that there were at least a few transitional ones made with the grooved handles and the current S30V blade.
There should be a few people around the forum with more info (and probably more accurate too).

They look like scratches and chips on the spine to me, but I hope Tim is right. I'll see if I can rub them off with a brush. It was a very bad day that it happened. I dropped 3 bottles of $$$ wine, stained my jeans, washed said jeans at a laundromat, find my knife in the dryer after 30min cycle, miss my flight to Las Vegas for a friend's bachelor party. Luckily I was able to catch a later flight and had a helluva time. I'm just sad to see my once pristine Mini Cyclone all scratched up. I will say that Kershaw built one hell of a knife, it still works perfectly.

I think maybe the differences in handles I'm seeing for Spec Bumps might be caused from low res photos but it's hard to tell:

Looks like the handle has small ridges and no web

Good to know I'm not hallucinating Kneedeep! Now I just gotta find the best price for a grooved handle w/S30v. The only thing I don't like about the Spec Bump is the tip down clip. Hopefully STR can do something with it.

You definitely weren't hallucinating.
I like the web, but prefer the way the grooved handle looks.

Its odd that A.G. Russell lists the old specs for the knife, I'd call them to see if they actually have new, old stock. It's hard to believe they wouldn't have changed the page though (too much trouble to photograph the new one.)

The other two sites with the grooved handles were probably just using the old Kershaw provided photo and they didn't bother changing it. That seems pretty common (most sites still use pictures of the Proto for the Mini Mojo, instead of the production version).

There was also a Spec/Speed Bump 1596SVBL that had the grooved handles from the Spec and 13C26 blade from the Speed Bump (a few were mislabeled as S30V).

The 3-D machined G10 with the web pattern are the only ones being made by kershaw now. The older ones had a grooved pattern, and many websites haven't updated their pictures, so just because a website shows the older picture, doesn't mean you will get the older G10 handle scales. Best to verify on the phone which style is in stock.

I prefer the web pattern myself. It adds some additional visual interest to the handle.

My TiZDP Mini Cyclone never ceases to amaze me. I cleaned her up last night and she looks almost as good as new. kneedeep, you were right about the Tungsten coating being tougher than most metals. All the marks I thought were chips on the blade were pieces of metal from the dryer. I used some steel wool and lightly rubbed the blade and all the flakes disappeared. There are some light scratch marks on the handles, and the pivot screw is scratched up but other than that she's fine. I did have to spend about 30 minutes on the Sharpmaker to take out a couple little chips and flat spots on the edge, but it was an opportunity to reprofile it to 15 degrees. She's a real slicer now. I had been carrying around my Benchmade 710D2 the last week and it really made me miss my Mini Cyclone. D2 doesn't seem hold an edge nearly as well as ZDP-189. I also ordered my Spec Bump this week. No one has the older version with the grooved handles in stock anymore so I had to settle for the sunburst pattern. As soon as I get it, it will be sent out to STR for a tip-up clip conversion. Now, the only other knife that I'm waiting for is a TiZDP Shallot to come out. That just may be the "perfect" knife for me, well at least for a few months anyway :D

Funny you should mention this, but I just got a new Spec Bump and thought it would be perfect if it could be carried tip up. You mention STR, but I am not familiar with the name. Where can I find out about converting mine as well?

STR has his own forum here on bladeforums.com that you can contact him in. I don't think he's converted a Spec Bump before, but he didn't seem to think it'd be a problem if the scales come off. He would have to use a different clip though as it curves the wrong way switched tip up. Hope that helps.
