Just bought one of these and like it very much . Has there been any problems with the locking thumb stud? Hows it hold up ?

I carried mine for a time and the only issues I ran into was dirt/blood in the lock and the spring getting "lazy", i.e. slow openning.

IMO very strong, I have abused mine and its still flawless.

I have a new Spec Bump and a well played-with Speed Bump with the same lock.

The Speed Bump is an aluminum scale model and is very smooth, locks up tight, and is easy to release with your thumb or index finger only using one side of the stud lock. I bought it used from another forum member and was a bit concerned when I first got it with how easily the lock was released with one thumb, but after using it for a while it is perfectly fine and locks up tight.

That being said; my new Spec Bump locks up tighter than a nun's @$$ and often locks up so tight that you've got to wrestle with the thing to get the stud lock disengaged from the G-10 shoulders. I don't exactly have weak fingers (if I say so myself :D) and I sometimes have to wrap my shirt over my finger and thumb on the studs and hold the blade with my other hand to get the thing to release.

I guess a knife that locks up too tight isn't a bad thing, but I'm hoping it will loosen up a little with use.

Used mine daily for over a year with no issues (along with a Mini Mojo/Mojito).
Mine is really smooth, locking and unlocking.

No problems with the Stud-Lock here either. It is tough.
That being said, it took me about 30-50 openings to get it nice and smooth.
Once it got to smooth it hasn't changed a bit.
I really like the huge recurve in the blade for cutting up boxes. Makes it so much easier for me.

Picked up a few Stonewashed versions a month or so ago since the Bump is being discontinued.

I think you'll be very happy with it.

I have one and I love it. The recurved edge sharpens easily with a Spyderco Sharpmaker or a fine round india stone.

Try taking a pencil and drawing on the frame where the thumbstuds lock into place. I have an Offset that was pretty stiff when I got it and this helped a lot to wear it in to where it didn't need it anymore.

Never had a problem with mine. The stud lock is ingenious and dependable.

As for sharpening, a set of Lansky 'Crock Sticks' will actually make the job enjoyable.

That's a good idea. I'll give it a shot.
Thanks!

I will say that I have carried this knife all week and love it. Im mostly a benchmade person but kershaw makes a top of the line knife . I will be buying many more kershaws . Thanks for all your input.

I have had a speed bump for about a year and love it ,I recently purchased a spec bump and started useing my speed bump at work and I find myself playing with it without realizing open close open close open close ....you all know the drill.

It stud lock sticks on occasion but easy to free up. I like it; it’s innovative and has an interesting blade. Pocket clip…not so much. Priced right it’s an interesting lock to have in your collection.

A little tip for releasing the stud lock. Instead of trying to push the lock up, try using your thumb or forefinger to roll the rotating stud up and over the top of the knife away from where it locks into place. I find that if I use this rolling motion it unlocks nice and easy every time. Give it a try.

Great knife. Full of features. On this knife you have the stud-lock, another lock to keep the blade from accidently opening, speedsafe, and 3D G10. A bit on the heavy side. The AO is a little soft on mine compared to other Ken Onion Speedsafe. Stud-lock gets little credit, but the Spec Bump is one of the best productin knives out there.

@OP: Yup, there has been a problem. The spring would not push the stud all the way into its 'locked' position (the stud seemed to be blocked by the liners' edges) and thus the lock would not always be secure; a few times I happened to fold the supposedly locked blade with a rather moderate pressure by my thumb. I contacted KAI and sent the knife back in for repair, hope they'll fix it, as I love the design.
