Kershaw Speed Bump Questions

I found this knife by accident today while pricing out some other knives and it looks very interesting. I really like the Spec Bump and have been waiting for the S30V version to come out, however this may be a more cost effective alternative. Before I make a decision to buy I do have some questions. Does anyone have one yet, if so what are your impressions? Secondly, what is the handle material?? According to Kershaw's web site the handle material is Akulon with Santoprene, however I have found a few that are advertised to have G10 scales. So is it one or the other or are both handle materials offered. Lastly, does anyone have any hands on experience with the Sandvik 13C26 steel? From what I've read its supposed to be some pretty stout stuff. Hopefully Thomas W can chime in.

There are two new Bumps coming out. There's the Speed Bump, with that akulon stuff you're talking about and the sandvik blade, but then there's the new ethereal Spec-esque Bump, with the old G10 handle and sandvik blade, which as best I can tell should not be called the speed bump, but where I see it for sale it is. The G10 is not a mistake. I'm definitely ordering one of these if I can afford it...the main thing keeping me from the normal spec bump was the black blade.

As I understand it, Akulon is kind of a rubbery surface. I believe the speed bumps are supposed to be 50ish, and I know that the Pseudo Bump is about 80 from one website.

Yeah I've been eyeballing the new uncoated speed / spec bumps too. I cant make up my mind between the regular black version or the newer ones. The Akulon version seems to be a pretty good deal....

The Speed Bump is a new addition in the 06 Kershaw line up. It is double injected molded with both Akulon and Santoprene (for both a hard and soft feel). The Akulon color will be a dark grey with a light texture, and the Santoprene will be black in color, and will have a "spore" like texture pattern. So the pictures you are seeing currently on our web site and others are a little inaccurate, as the color and texturing is a little off. All the spec's are accurate. Hopefully production proto's will be done soon, and true Speed Bump pictures can be posted. MSRP will be $99.95, and they are still a good 3-4 weeks from being delivered.

The Pseudo Bump (not bad Art) is a limited edition short run we did for Moteng (one of our wholesale distributors). It has our 1st generation Spec Bump G-10 scales, and incorporates the Speed Bump Sandvik blade. Cool piece. It is on the market now, and has a MSRP of $129.95.

Sorry if there is confusion on all these Bump variations, but the pattern has really taken off, so there is interest in more than one flavor.

As far as the Sandvik steel goes, we like it very much, and will be doing more projects with it in the future. I will let others chime in with deeper details.

Thomas,
Thanks for the info, I just wanted to be sure about the handle material. I really like G10, and wanted to be sure that what I had found was correct. In regards to Sandvik steel, I think I'm going to give it a shot. From what I've been able to find out about it, I think I'll like it. I'll post pics when I get my knife!!!

I hear the Sandvik stuff is pretty decent, and comparable in most ways to 440C, but I may be wrong on that last count.

As well as I know Sandvic steel is made from ore which do not have any P and S by nature (Sandvic is name for this ore deposit). So it shows better performance then steel with same composition but with small amount of S and P.

Sandvic 12C27 -

C=0.6
Cr=14-14.5
Mn=0.35
Si=0.35

Sandvic 13C26 -

C=0.65
Mn=0.65
Si=0.4
Cr=13.0

Sandvic 19C27

C=0.95
Mn=0.65
Si=0.4
Cr=13.5

I wish somebody will start using Sandvic 19C27...

This seel is choose for initial design of KaBar Next Generation, now they use 440A unfortunately. Also Bark River use it as a stainless steel for their knives.

As I know Kershaw use Sandvic 13C26.

Thanks, Vassili.
