Kershaw Speed Bump ?

I own the second revision Spec Bump with S30V blade and spiral patterned checkered G10, as well as the grey and black plastic handled Sandvik Speed Bump. They're both excellent knives, small in the pocket and good for urban carry. the Speed Bump is of course, lighter and due to it's materials it feels 'cheap.' never had any problems with lock failure or AO failure for either of the knives, of course. It's a good value for the money, especially if you look for the lowest price online. What did you want to know about it?

I have a Blue Bump and got to play with the speed bump a couple weeks back.

I rather liked it overall. However, I think it's going for over 60, and I do think you can do better than that for the money. Among the big knife choices are the full sized griptillian and d`allara drop point...or Endura, to a lesser extent.

But it's a unique knife...if you want a recurve blade, AO, etc, then those other knives just aren't going to do it.

However, while it is no huge problem, the handle looked and felt cheap, with its obviously plastic molding. No big deal to a user though, it's comfortable and secure.

I'd go ahead and spend the extra 20 and get the pseudo bump with g10 handles and the same sandvik blade.

If you have it, I'd actually get a Blue or Green Bump and not compromise at all.

But in the end, not a bad choice.

I picked up an S30V "Spec Bump" off ebay for about 60 (yes, that's sixty). It has 3D machined G10 scales and an uncoated blade. Get in contact with me if you want seller's info.

The knife's ergonomics are near perfect. It goes with the hand like milk and cookies due to the swells and shape of the grip. This goes for sabre grip, reverse grip, etc.

The knife draws quickly. For me it's fastest using the thumbstuds since it can be carried tip-down only. The flipper works well too. The studlock is secure, strong, and easy to disengage with one hand for closing. Until the knife is broken in though, the studlock can hang up occasionally requiring two hands to close. After a hundred openings or so it's free and smooth. I love this lock design!

My only complaint is that sometimes the safety will engage itself accidentally when clipping it to my pocket. This can be avoided by carefully putting it back into the pocket. This safety works much better than the ones found on the leek and other early AO kershaws. It uses a spring/ball bearing and is much more secure and less likely to move around.

Closed, the knife measures almost 5", yet it feels small in the pocket. I however don't carrry this knife often because of the size and shape of its blade. It's just a big knife, and I prefer a smaller knife for every day tasks. That, and whipping out this huge shank to open a box in front of people is overkill. The knife looks MEAN. To me, the Spec Bump would be a very fast-deploying and effective self-defense knife. Otherwise I think there's better options for EDC.

Shame though, because it's such a sweet blade and I never carry it :(

I also wanted to add that I've handled the regular plastic-handled Speed Bump with the santoprene overlays. It felt cheap and flimsy compared to the G10 "Spec Bump" models. Though it just felt that way, I'm sure it's just as strong and effective. I'm not used to having rubber on the grip of my knifes so that's probably the case.

IMHO, if you like G10 and want something that "feels" more solid, spend the extra money to get the hybrid spec/speed bump (some of them have s30v blades). With prices so low on ebay, the difference is small.

Get one, you won't regret it. Fashionable and quality made - and just plain fun to carry and play with.

I prefer the blade profile on the spec bump more than the original bump. also the Spec Bump is closer to Ken's mid-tech Spec Bump than the original.

Got pseudo bump (the one with Sandvik blade and old-style G10 handle)
Exellent quality, jutst blade part next to handle not well sharpened (you can shave hair with other part though). I was cautious about stud lock but its ok - very convenient.
