Kershaw Storm 2: time for a new knife?

Hey everyone, long time lurker of these forums, very helpful and often times hilarious as well.

In my Sr year of Highschool, 2005 or so, my ex girlfriend got me a Kershaw Storm 2 for my birthday. Now I wasn't a big knife guy at the time, and this was my very first one I've ever really owned. I do like this knife quite a bit, but I've had it for quite a while and frankly have no idea the relative quality of it.

I hear many Kershaw fans SWEAR by the Skyline, but I never hear much about the Storm 2, which I believe is discontinued anyway. Now that its 2012, the Storm is still holding up, more or less. The liner lock still functions, the blade is still sharp (or able to be sharpened) and I still really like the flipper function. However, there's not a small amount of vertical play, and I fear that horizontal play may be next, though this may be misplaced fear.

I've seen the Storm on Kershaw's website for like 45$ msrp, and then skyline which is around 40. Is the Storm 2 some kind of secret mid high(ish) end knife that I didn't even know about, or should I be unafraid of (what I hope is) upgrading to the new Kershaw series?

Thanks in advance, and if I wasn't clear on my question let me know, I don't feel I quite asked it well enough, but we shall see.

I am confused on your question, are you asking if the storm is a upgrade over over the storm 2? becuase 1 & 2 just relate to the size. if your asking about the skyline, its a much lighter slimer knife.
Info is everywear...

I don't know much about the Storm2 but I think I'm one of the few people who really dislikes the Skyline. I prefer a beefier knife and the Skyline is not it. It's too light the handle feels odd in my hand and I just don't like the blade shape but then again you might like it :)

Thanks for your reply! I suppose what I am asking is if its worth getting a newer model of knife. My Storm 2 is serving me well, but is it worth purchasing say, a Skyline, or a Tremor? Or would I be wasting my money when I already have a good (better?) knife, albeit slightly worn.

(EDIT) In case I'm still not clear, are there significant upgrades between the Storm 2 generation of knives and the current one?

I think the storm 2 is superior to the skyline and the tremor. Your answer is... you already have a better knife.

However, buying a Kershaw is never ever, ever, a waste of money.

I like bigger, USA made knives, the skyline is tiny, the tremor is bigger but made in china with cheaper steel. The storm 2 feel and function is really nice. I carried the storm 2 for years until I left it on my bumper... I now have a rule to never place anything on my bumper.

Venturing out a bit never hurts, having a smaller knife like the skyline can serve its purpose. I will carry my ZT0301 with a leek in case i need to do some detailed cutting. Id say get another kershaw just to get another kershaw

Thanks Bob! Now I know. I was deliberating on my next knife purchase, whether I wanted a new folder or a new fixed blade. Now I have my answer. Kabar TDI here I come! :D
