Kershaw Storm lock failure

Wanted to report that the three inch recurve Storm has had two lock failures. The lockup was never great even new. I'm not sure if the lockup has decreased or if something else has changed. The blade develops very noticeably lateral blade play pretty easily and I think the combination of lots of play and poor lockup might have done it. I was unable to reproduce the lock failure with playing with the blade while applying force against the lock (hoping to demonstrate that the lateral play allowed it around the lock) or with moderate spine whacks.

When did the failures happen? Had you just opened the knife or had it been in use for awhile? Does the liner lock appear to engage at the same place and have you tried bending the liner out a little?

Have you sent it back to Kershaw? Or contacted them? I am curious what they have to say.

Well, it's actually a framelock. Also, I'd like to say that this isn't a reflection of failures on higher end knives...the Benchmade Skirmishes I've handled had superb lockup--well, even the Chives I've handled.

Apparently, it was being used like an exacto knife, with fingers out of the way (thankfully) and he accidentally hit the back of the knife against the desk (not hard). I'm not too sure about the details, just that his fingers were out of the way...and it happened a few weeks ago so it's a bit fuzzy. Next time I talk to him we'll get the whole story.

I'm sure Kershaw will replace it. I actually really like Kershaw, though the Storm was one of my favorites and I think I'm going to have to remove it from the list....which doesn't mean I don't still like it, just not a favorite anymore.

I reported in the initial review of the storm that the lock up was not very good, so we were weary of it from the get go, but it had been reliable up until recently. It may just be a coincidence...I actually personally doubt that the lockup has changed much, it was just a new combination of circumstances.

We have tried any fixes, we're just going to let Kershaw deal with it. Hopefully he'll just get a new knife.

Did you try tightening the pivot screw? That has always been a weakness with that knife.

Yeah, and it might work, I couldn't get it to fail in either case. I just have my friend's report that it did. The blade does develop play altogether too easily...always have to watch that screw. I've been meaning to get him some loctite.
