Kershaw Storm thumbstuds

Just bought a storm, well the blade is awsome, probably the sharpest out of box I've ever got, and the design is sweet too.

Sadly the thumbstuds are the same, probably the sharpest out of box I've ever got. I played with it a big tonight, well, the skin on my thumb already got grinded up a bit from the stubs. It might work well with assisted open, but on a manual folder, all the sharp edges just grab hold of skin to grind and slash as it's rotated 180 degrees.

Is there anyway to make the knife easier to open and the studs more thumb friendly? I like the knife, but the stud is the worst I've ever seen. If not guess I'll have to return the knife and get another spyderco instead.

i would try a file. just to take the edge off of the studs. that may work

A regular dimond pad sharpener will work or you can use sand paper being careful not to scratch up your blade.

I flattened my studs on both sides and drilled a hole straight through it with a #44 carbide drill and stuck a Jantz supply aftermarke stud on it. I like it much better personally than the original. I did the same thing to my Blur after turning it into a frame lock just recently.

I had a similar problem with one of my Scallions. The thumb studs wanted to snag my pockets, either removing the knife or putting it back in my pocket.

Well, I got out the trusty Dremel, and very carefully rounded the outer edge of the thumb studs when in the closed position. The area of the studs one would use to open still have the tier cuts. Now it goes in and comes out without any snagging...

A nice little mod that perhaps Kershaw should take into consideration....

The stud is already tiny enough I can barely push against, I'm not sure if I file it I can push against it at all. The worst part is the initial lock stage (if that makes any sense), it's just way to hard to overcome, I can push against the sharp stud till it's painful and it still wouldn't release (but that may be just my thumb is already painful from trying too many times).

Beautiful knife, ruined by a half assed stud. If only it had a regular stud everything would be perfect. :(

If only I had a drill press and carbide bits.

Alright screw it, I tried to make the pit on blade where the lock engages more gradual so it would disengage it eaiser, dulled two HSS bit and a cobalt bit, not a scratch on the blade. Returning it to walmart tomorrow and gona stay with spyderco knives for now, at least my thumb don't get all slashed up. :grumpy:

I avoid any Kershaw model that uses those horrendous thumbstuds. It's a shame, because they have several otherwise excellent models that feature the reprehensible things.

I just picked up the Storm II at wally world this weekend. I love the knife itself, its fantastic, but its going back because of those thumb studs. After two days my thumb has been worn raw because of that sucker. I thought about it a lot last night and I shouldn't have to wince while opening a knife when I use it.

I only have one other knife to reference, a Ka-Bar Dozier folder with the hole opener, and I like it a lot but wanted something bigger.
