Hey guys,

I bought myself a Kershaw Storm lastnight, and might I say it is a very very nice knife for what I paid 32.99. Great price. The only problem I have with this knife is the sandpaper type grip it has on the reverse side of the clip. Originally I didn't think this would be a problem, however, with the grip tape facing the inside of my pocket it RAKES the crap out of my knuckles everytime I reach into my pocket! Just kind of wondering what they were thinking using a material like that for a pocket clip knife??

Anyone else have one that they modified or otherwise remedied the problem with? I am most likely taking this knife back tonight and getting another, but I'd like to maybe come up with a solution first, I LOVE the blade on this knife! What would you consider it? A recurve edge?

It's a recurved edge and the abrasive tapes helps overcome the steel handle's tendency to slip (steel and other metals like to be slippery). Don't know of any work around other than replacing the tape with rubber electrical tape and hoping it's grippy enough.

The Storm is probably one of the best deals out there right now. I avoid the knuckle scraping by putting it on a pocket that I don't carry important, constant use items in. I guess you could also use the tape to sand down some wood until it is not so abrasive anymore. I believe others have done so with this type of tape.

You must have an older one. Kershaw just changed the inserts on the Storms. I just got one and love it very much more than the original. Its still very grippy but now more rubbery feeling and quite a bit nicer to the hand.

The good news is though, that if you abraid that one you have it will lose a lot of that bite it has now much as sandpaper does after use. Take a block of pine to it and you can calm it down right quick.

Thanks guys, I might try the pinewood block, or I might just take it back and trade it in for a leek and pay a little bit extra I was torn between the two anyways. Or hell, I guess I could even try to remove the grip and cut rubber to glue in place of it?

Customizing your own is always good.

The Leek is a good idea too -- alongside, not in place of! :D

I've got a quick question for anyone with a "new and improved" Storm. I love my grip-tape insert model, but the only thing that bugs me is the pivot pin, which spins freely on both sides, and is therefore quite frustrating to adjust. Has this also been adressed on the newer models? Thanks in advance for any help!

I have two Storms and two Storm II models and have not seen this on any of them so I can't say. It seems like Thom Brogan said something about seeing something like that on one when he tried to take it apart though now that I think about it but when I got it it came apart for me just fine.

Sometimes you can wedge the blade by putting some lateral pressure on it to bind the pivot a bit or if you have a sticky rubber glove or jar opener thing from the kitchen slap that on the non screw side and hold it while you push in and see if you can't back out the screw.

Once out clean it all up good and tighten it back to where you want it. Its probably got loctite in it right now.

You can always take off the "grip tape" and change it with something. My brother did this with his Microtech Mini-Socom. He took out the "griptape" and replaced it with Ray skin. It is not as grippy before, but still has plenty of bite without hurting your pockets.
