hi,

i just picked up a kershaw talon 1420st. i can't find any stamping that designates the steel type. does it say anywhere on the knife what type of steel was used?

can anyone tell me what type of steel was used in the the talon 1400 series? i ask because i also found a 1422st which is coming in tomorrow.

i've been reading a lot about these. any first hand info will be greatly appreciated.

i can't believe how smoothly the 1420st opens! it glides open. it opens and locks with a good snap of the wrist. should i be able to open it this way?

at first i thought something was wrong with it because it opens so smoothly.

how did kershaw manage this? it just doesn't feel like metal on metal when it opens.

lastly, i read a couple of things that said the liner locks gave way with the "whack" test? anyone know of problems with these locks?

i'd like to test mine. how do you do the whack test?

thanks,

mike

I'm pretty sure that entire series was ATS-34. Awesome design. The Starky Ridge was a companion design, with a Ti or a G-10 handle.

Edit to add: Here's a review http://members.tripod.com/~limsk/ktalon.htm that refers to ATS-34 steel & teflon bushings. Also very funny, refers to the bottle opener model as a monstrosity. Tell that to fans of the Wave. :)

All the 1400 series had titanium or G10 handles and ATS 34 blades. Three different Talon styles included the plain blade, combo blade, and the modified blade with bottle opener. The 1410 and 1415 's were more of a drop point blade and quite the work horse of a knife . All were produced in the mid nineties. If you have time to download it , here is a link to a recent article I wrote about Kershaw Knives. http://www.oregonknifeclub.com/Newsletter 0610.pdf There are some photos available as well http://www.oregonknifeclub.com/kershaw_knives.html ( not 56K friendly )
