Ok so i know this is only like a little 30 dollar knife, but im going to ask anyway. is the kershaw tone worth getting. Its crappy chinese steel but its coated in dlc or something? will it still rust like crappy chinese steel? do any of you have kershaw tones? do you like them? thanks for the help.

8cr13mov is a good steel. Just cause something is from China doesntt automatically make it crappy. It wont rust if the coating stays on there, but 8cr13mov is akin to aus8 in rust resistance.

I think my Chinese Kershaws were excellent value folders. I have never been disappointed in the performance of the
8cr13mov.
Entry level blade purchases often lead to purchases of higher quality (American) knives. Most knife newbies are hesitant to invest $50+ on their first knife.
I am completly satisfied with the quality of American made Kershaws and see no need to buy Chinese-made knives anymore:thumbup:. I want help put Americans back to work. We can only do that by trying to buy American products whenever possible. That being said, can you think of a better starter EDC knife for $20 than the Oso Sweet:confused:

As mentioned by the other posters, 8Cr13MoV is comparable to AUS-8 and is a good budget steel. I've used a Kershaw in that 8Cr13MoV (a Nerve) quite a bit, and they do a very good job with the heat-treat on the steel: it performs at least as well as my AUS-8 knives and my Spyderco Tenacious in 8Cr13MoV.

You can get a Kershaw Skyline for about 30 bucks if you're "USA First, Last and Only". The Skyline is my favorite knife and EDC for past 3 years. I would get it if it were made on the moon out of cheese steel by little green men, so long as it performed like what I have in my pocket.

Other than that, I can't speak to the Tone, as I don't have one. Let us know what you think, if you get one.

Your post says a lot about your inexperience.

First, 8Cr13MoV is not a crappy steel. Definitely middle of the road, but a good hard working steel. I have several knives bladed with that, and it is a good steel for a working knife. It doesn't hold an edge like some of the more expensive steels, but you can't tear the blades up. When it gets dull, a few licks on the diamond rod and it sharpens easily and quickly. In other words, it isn't a project that requires special equipment and a fair amount of time to keep a knife with that steel really sharp.

Second, I have never had a rusting problem. I live in South Texas, and I sweat like hell all Spring, Summer and Fall. The most rust I have generated on a blade that rides in my pocket for 12 -14 hours a day can easily be rubbed off with a pencil eraser. For me, I just keep using the knife and the rust rubs off on its own.

And now some real advice. I have several Kershaws ranging from the lower end Ace, all the way up to the Tyrade. There are many in between. I am not a fan boy, but I am certainly a fan of their quality and value. While I like some more than others, I have never owned a "crappy" Kershaw knife. When you come to a specific forum asking the folks that support and use the product of that forum, you would be best served by NOT asking questions with repeated insults that berate that product. Especially when they are baseless.

Last piece of advice. If you are sure something is crap, don't buy it. That makes you a fool if you do.

i have a couple knifes in 8Cr13MoV and its a great steel it sharpens easy and hold good edge

Hm. ya i think ill get one. I guess i cant really say much because the only chinese kershaw i have is the clash. I guess im just hesitant on chinese made knives. Idk. thanks for the input guys.

It's cool Legenda, quite frankly I had a bias against Chinese made knives and 8cr13mov until pretty recently. Then I bought a Kershaw Oso Sweet... Yeah I would say give the Tone a try.

Honestly I'm with you regarding 8cr13alphabetsoup, Legenda.

The only knife I've owned with that steel was a Tenacious and I wasn't impressed at all. Many people seem to compare it to Aus-8, 440A/B, even 13c26 on a regular basis but IMHO it's a notch or two below many other 'budget' or 'middle of the road' steels. I found it would chip like crazy and would lose its edge in no time flat. Steels like 13c26 and Aus-8, on the other hand, would hold a working edge significantly longer and would tend to roll slightly or deform a little bit instead of taking significant chips out of the edge like the 8cr13 would. I ended up selling it because I was tired of having to completely restore the edge after every shift. I can't say I had a problem with it rusting, though.

I can't speak to the Tone as I haven't tried it. If you like the design and are okay with the limitations of the steel it uses, then you might as well give it a shot.

Also, some folks seem to be getting a little mad at the guy for not liking 8cr13MoV. Relax, people. The guy said he already owns a Clash in the same steel, so chances are he has some experience with it and isn't just making assumptions.

I have a Tone and I gotta say it is a great knife for the money. Mine was a little sticky on deployment when I got her but after a very minor adjustment she works great. The blade is a little off center but hey, under $30 you can't have everything.

I used my tone last year to gut and skin a whitetail and it worked great, I have never used a tanto to gut a deer before but I can testify first hand, as sharp as they are, she worked great. We stayed hunting for 3 days which means I did not get a chance to clean and oil my blade properly till I got home. I did a quick rinse with algae laden pond water. Even so, not a spot of rust to be found on my Tone and still not a spot. Get the Tone, works great, looks great and you won't break the bank.

Ya I just got one yesterday. Pretty solid knife, I love the g-10 in the handle. Its still got that famous kershaw shavin sharp edge even with the 8Cr13Mov. I cut through some boxes with it to text it out and it seemed to do a pretty good job. still sharp afterwords too.

I've got the crappy Chinese made Crown with crappy Chinese made steel and honestly have to say I think the knife kicks a$$. I've had no problem at all with the steel, I can get it wicked sharp and it holds the edge reasonably well. Also, the fit and finish is superb, and it only cost me $15 bucks. I don't think you can ask for a better deal.

ono724 I gotta agree on the Crown. I found them for $10 at a big name store, and I purchased all that they had, which was only 6, if they would have had more I would have bought at least 10 for Christmas gifts. Well, I decided to keep 1 for myself. What a cool little knife! It gets more use than any of my other Kershaws just because at $10 I am not afraid to destroy it, I have yet to do so BTW. I am going to have some happy people on my gift list this year. And I gotta say, I am really proud to give the Crown as a gift.

There is one thing that did happen to the knife. I dropped the Crown and the wood chipped close to the clip and now the clip moves around. But I like this knife so much I would rather keep it as a beater than send it in to get fixed. I am even thinking about removing the clip all together to use it as a true in the pocket knife. Best $10 dollar knife I ever bought. Sorry to go off topic but gotta love the Crown.
